    In this info-packed and fun-filled presentation, Rick Sammon, author of 43 books and host of 45 online classes, will share with you his tips, tricks and techniques for getting pro-quality photographs – from close-ups to super wide-angle photographs – with your smartphone. To demonstrate his talking points, Rick, an iPhone photographer, will share his photographs from Morocco, Tanzania, Florida, and from some of our national parks. Rick will also talk about why you should have your smartphone with you all the time, as he does when exploring in and around his home in Croton on Hudson, NY.   • Sunday, October 31, 10:30 am – 1:30 pm , and Wednesday, November 3, 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm – Flower Photography from Start to Finish (Hybrid Course)

    This Tower Hill Botanic Garden program consists of two sessions. The first session will take place on October 31 from 10:30 – 1:30 in person and the other session is virtual. When registering, please select both sessions.

    If you’ve found that your garden photos don’t quite have the impact that you were hoping for, this class is for you. Join professional outdoor photographer Paul Nguyen in this two-session blended learning class, and discover how to create stunning close-ups and artistic images of your plants and gardens. The first session meets at Tower Hill and emphasizes proper technique, equipment choice, camera settings, and composition to create the best possible in-camera captures, as we investigate trees, leaves, and other Autumn subjects. The second session happens online over Zoom, and reveals the editing techniques that experts apply to give their photos that additional “pop” and polish that bring them to life and make them ready for printing or sharing.

    Requirements for the first session:
    Camera with a zoom lens or dedicated macro lens
    Tripod
    Clothing and footwear that allow for mobility and flexibility

    Optional equipment:
    Reflector/diffuser
    Close-up flash
    Kneeling pad or folding seat

    Requirements for the second session:
    Laptop or computer with speakers and a stable high-speed internet connection

    Professional Photographer Paul Nguyen is a native of Massachusetts with over 30 years of experience in film and digital photography. He currently specializes in digital photography of natural landscapes and wildlife from New England and around the world. In April 2017, he served in the prestigious National Parks Artist in Residence program, at Petrified Forest, Arizona. His work also includes an exclusive assignment as the photographer for the Gallery on the Charles River at the Museum of Science, Boston. Since 2019, he has been an affiliated artist at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. His images have been licensed by organizations such as the Nature Conservancy, Tamron USA, Amazing New England Artworks, and numerous local and international publications, and his outstanding image-making and teaching have gained him equipment sponsorships from Tamron USA and Sun Surveyor. Paul currently serves as a program guide and brand ambassador for Swedish outfitter Fjallraven.

    Paul lives and works out of Hopkinton, MA, and can be seen promoting and selling his work at art shows across New England throughout the year, and is also a lecturer and contest judge for local camera clubs and the New England Camera Club Council. The Boston Camera Club awarded him Judge of the Year honors for 2015-2016. He offers local and destination photography workshops through his business, BlueHour Photo Ventures, as well as private one-on-one instruction.

  • Saturday, September 14, 10:30 am – 2:30 pm – Panoramic Photography

    On September 14 at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, from 1030 – 2:30, learn how to create beautiful panoramic images by taking multiple images and then combining them in Photoshop. You will learn the techniques in taking properly exposed and composed images and then combining them to create beautiful panoramic photographs using a Photoshop program. This class will be extremely hands-on and will require you to bring a camera capable of manual settings, and a tripod if you have one. If you do not have a tripod, several will be available for student use. Steve first began by shooting sports photography for local high schools, then weddings, and stock agencies. Then his love of the outdoors led him to focusing more on his true passion, “nature photography”. Steve was an active member of the Gateway Camera Club for many years, and has won many ribbons and awards at fairs and competitions through the group and on his own. Several of his images have been published in school textbooks. His favorite places to shoot are Acadia National Park in Maine, the Green Mountains of Vermont, and the Cape Cod National Seashore.

    Take your garden photography from good to great by capturing Tower Hill Botanic Garden at its most beautiful. This June 29 course is ideal for photographers with some knowledge of manual camera settings who want to take their abilities to the next level. Join Steve McGrath as he reveals his tips and techniques for taking quality close up as well as landscape photographs in the gardens. We will discuss how to use wide angle, normal, and telephoto lenses most effectively. Learn to sharpen your awareness of light and use creative white balance and ISO for expanding your images. We will view our images after an extensive day in the gardens.   • Thursdays, March 28 – May 16, 6:30 – 8:30 – Photographing the Landscape

    Demand more from your landscape photographs than just a depiction of a beautiful sunset or seascape. Broaden your photographic vision and push your landscape photographs to be more creative and dynamic. Capture the landscape (both rural and urban) with new and refreshing perspectives by means of weekly class assignments. You will also view the work of some contemporary landscape photographers and discuss what makes them great. Bring your camera (any kind) to class and prepare to bring in 4″ x 6″ prints each week. This Arnold Arboretum weekly eight session class begins Thursday, March 28 from 6:30 – 8:30 at the Arboretum, 125 Arborway in Jamaica Plain, and is taught by Robin Radin. Fee $210.     Good photography is not about fancy equipment or post-image processing; it is about capturing a subject and inspiring viewers with the final image. Join Dan Jaffe at Garden in the Woods in Framingham on Sunday, October 14 from 2 – 4 for a discussion of composition, lighting, angles and other aspects of photography.     Learn how to add a “wow” factor to your garden pictures at a workshop on August 9 from 7 – 8:30 at The Gardens at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley. Learn the top ten tips how to improve your photos, then stroll the gardens to put your knowledge into practice.   • Wednesday, August 9 (rain date August 16), 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm – Night Photography in the Gardens

    This Tower Hill Botanic Garden lecture on Wednesday, August 9 from 7 – 8 will cover the basics of night photography – the uniqueness of making photos at night, equipment, exposure, white balance, highlights and shadows, composition, capturing the element of time and a brief concept of light painting.

    The photo shoot, from 8 – 10, will include one-on-one guidance on how to get the best photos.     For photo shoot only, required equipment: a camera capable of manual settings (user-selectable exposure time, aperture, ISO), a tripod to hold that camera and a remote control/intervalometer for exposures longer than 30 seconds. You can buy these for around $15 on Amazon.com: search for your camera brand, model and the word “intervalometer”. A small flashlight to get around and colored flashlights for light painting the plants are useful. Advanced users can also do light drawing with any gadget that lights up.     Instructor Jürgen Lobert is a Massachusetts-based fine art photographer born and raised in Germany. He received a Ph.D. in atmospheric chemistry from Gutenberg University in Mainz before moving to the US in 1991. Jürgen is a self-taught photographer who specializes in night photography, daytime long exposures as well as Urban Exploration. According to Jürgen, there is a profound peace in roaming the nights in remote places, capturing the element of time to create otherworldly, serene and hauntingly beautiful photos. Jürgen is an executive member of the Boston Camera Club and the founder and organizer of the Greater Boston Night Photographers Meetup group. He has organized more than 100 photo excursions and he is a lecturer, instructor and judge for regional camera clubs.

     

  • Saturday, July 15, 9:00 am – 2:00 pm – Landscape Photography Workshop

    In this intermediate level class at Tower Hill Botanic Garden on Saturday, July 15 from 9 – 2, Steve McGrath will show the various camera settings appropriate for Landscape Photography, utilizing your Shutter and Aperture settings for the best exposure. The class will also cover composition, focal length, depth of field, filters and the use of natural light. Tripods are a plus but not mandatory. After a presentation, we will head out into the Gardens to photograph and end the class with a critique of your work.
