  • Sunday, January 22, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm – Taking Better Pictures with Your Digital Camera

    Are you still getting to know your digital camera and its features? Bring your camera to Tower Hill Botanic Garden on Sunday, January 22 at 10 am and learn when and how to use its special features, such as program mode, manual mode, aperture priority and shutter priority. We’ll also cover basic composition and best use of light for different situations. Students are encouraged to bring one or two samples of their previous efforts to share with other students.     Steve McGrath is a professional freelance photographer and photography teacher who has been creating images for 20 years. Steve first began by shooting sports photography for local high schools, then weddings, and stock agencies. Then his love of the outdoors led him to focusing more on his true passion, “nature photography”. Steve was an active member of the Gateway Camera Club for many years, and has won many ribbons and awards at fairs and competitions through the group and on his own. Several of his images have been published in school text books. His favorite places to shoot are Acadia National Park in Maine, the Green Mountains of Vermont, and the Cape Cod National Seashore.

    On Saturday, April 30 from 9 – 12:30 at the Arnold Arboretum, improve your photographs of nature in this half-day workshop, a talk followed by hands-on experience in the Arnold Arboretum at one of the most beautiful times of year. Learn about composition, color, light, depth of field, and focus. Bring your camera and manual and familiarize yourself with the operation of your camera prior to the workshop.   • Saturday, May 9, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm – Landscape Photography

    In this intermediate level Tower Hill Botanic Garden photography class on Saturday, May 9, from 10 – 2, Steve McGrath will show the various camera settings appropriate for Landscape Photography, utilizing your Shutter and Aperture settings for the best exposure. The class will also cover composition, focal length, depth of field, filters and the use of natural light. Tripods are a plus but not mandatory. After a presentation, we will head out into the Gardens to photograph and end the class with a critique of your work.

  • Saturday, October 4, 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm- Places, Landscapes, and Travel Photography Workshop

    This October 4 workshop is for the person who wants to take exceptional photographs of their holidays and capture those amazing landscapes you only see in magazines or on postcards. Learning the difference between a happy-snap and a photograph, you will learn to use the manual settings on your camera to ensure that you never miss capturing one of those special holiday moments or captivating sunsets, and we will make sure you have a photograph you will treasure forever.

    This three-hour specialized class, starting at 3 pm, includes correct use of light and color, composition and framing of your image, identifying the key focus in your landscape, balancing your image, finding the right angle and perspective and ensuring that the photograph you take tells the story of your travels to everyone who looks at it.

  • Saturday, March 29 – Sunday, March 30, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm – Comprehensive Wildlife Photography Seminar

    World-renowned wildlife photographer Charles Glatzer and Massachusetts-based avian photographer Michael Milicia will be hosting a weekend seminar March 29 – 30, 9 – 5, which will provide you with the knowledge and tools you need to take control of your imagery and produce wildlife photographs that are a cut above.

    Emphasis will be placed on five key areas: knowing the fundamentals, familiarity with your equipment, being pro-active, knowing your subject, and knowing your way around the digital darkroom.   • Saturday, May 11, 4:30 pm – 7:00 pm – Wellesley College Photo Walk

    Grab your camera and join the Friends of Wellesley College Botanic Gardens on Saturday, May 11, to experience one of the most beautiful college campuses in the US, with the late afternoon light striking the landscape, a favorite time for photographers.  After a brief orientation meeting, set out with Dennis Ditto and David Kahn on a tour of their favorite spots for photography, where you’ll have time to compose shots of the spring beauty.  Learn tips for good composition and try techniques to achieve sharp close-ups and stunning vistas.  With two knowledgeable photographers at hand, you will quickly discover how to make the most out of your camera.  Bring your camera with the owner’s manual (if you can find it) and any accessories you wish, and a good working knowledge of your camera.  Tripods are useful but not essential.  There are stairs, hills, and uneven paths, so wheeled equipment carriers are discouraged.  Rain date May 18.  Friends of Wellesley College Botanic Gardens members pay $30, non-membrs $38.  Visit www.wellesley.edu/wcbgfriends to register.

  • Saturday, September 22, 9:00 am – 3:45 pm – Take a Shot: A Digital Photography Symposium

    The Boston Center for Adult Education (BCAE) will hold its second annual Take a Shot: Digital Photography Symposium, an educational opportunity for all those with an interest in what goes on behind the camera, on Saturday, September 22 beginning at 9 am.

    Open to students of all levels, the symposium is designed to provide information and technique sharing through various interactive and intensive workshops taught by some of the most recognized photographers in New England including:

    Chris Padgett, Landscape and Event Photographer, Contributor to Stuff Magazine; Diallo Ferguson, Owner of Visual Affects Studios and Producer of A Passion 4 Fashion TV; Mitch Weiss, Artist; Jason Rich, Author of How To Do Everything Digital Photography; Conor Doherty, Photographer; and Joel Veak, Professional Lifestyle and Commercial Photographer, Contributor to Stuff Magazine.

    The day-long symposium, sponsored by Hunt’s Photo and Video, New England’s largest photography retailer, will offer workshops of varying concentrations including: How To Figure Out Your Digital Camera, Digital Photography 101, Picture Process: Photography As Fine Art, Eye Catching Vacation Photos, Professional Lighting Tips And Tricks and About Face: Perfect Portraits.

  • Sunday, September 30, 9:00 am – 12:00 noon – Nature in Focus: Taking Great Close Ups

    Kim Smith, photographer and filmmaker, will give a class at the Arnold Arboretum on Sunday, September 30 from 9 – noon on Nature in Focus: Taking Great Close Ups. Learn tips for taking great close-up photographs from celebrated butterfly and garden photographer Kim Smith. Through slides and hands on demonstrations, Kim will guide you in capturing the beauty of the flora and fauna found in nature. Bring your camera and questions, and a tripod if you have one. You will gain more from the class if first you familiarize yourself with your camera’s manual. (Note: This is not a macro-photography class.) Fee is $40 for Arboretum members, $55 for non-members.   • Friday, March 23, 9:30 am – 4:00 pm – It’s a Small World – Macro-Digital Photography

    Discover how to create stunning close-ups of flowers and other plant features in this one-day workshop with photographer David Kahn, at the Wellesley College Botanic Garden in Wellesley, Massachusetts.  Begin with a discussion of equipment, preparation, composition, lighting, tips and tricks, as well as see examples of what can be achieved.  Then practice macro techniques using a variety of settings in the Ferguson Greenhouses and Visitor Center.  This hands-on workshop is ideal for photographers who want to explore their own creative vision in the realm of macro photography as well as artists who want to record small details as a reference for future artwork.  Requirements: a digital camera and a good working knowledge of your camera, including being able to focus on a subject 6″ or less from the lens, set your camera’s exposure mode, and turn your flash on or off.  A more complete list of requirements will be available online at www.wellesley.edu/WCFH.  Please contact the office if you are not sure if your equipment or experience is sufficient.  Please bring your lunch as David plans a special presentation over lunch hour.  The class, which runs from 10 – 4, will take place Friday, March 23 (snow date Friday, March 30), beginning at 9:30 am.  Friends of the Wellesley College Botanic Garden: $75, non-members $95.
