  • Summer 2023 CSA Sign Ups

    Martha’s Vineyard:

    Summer is almost here. Sign up now to reserve your weekly share of produce from the Island Grown Initiative Farm. The Summer CSA starts Thursday, June 15, and will run through Thursday, October 26. Your CSA membership supports a number of initiatives at Island Grown, from honing the regenerative growing techniques in our fields to the quality of the produce that we grow and all the way to the volume of food we’re able to donate through local channels.     Winchester:

All pickups are “on-farm” at 82 Ridge St, Winchester, MA at the basement door (north side) of our new All Seasons Barn. You can wait in line for contactless pick up, or park and walk down to grab your share.

    The Iris Society of Massachusetts is holding its biennial plant sale offering an extensive array of named irises at great low prices. You can find both bearded and Siberian irises. All the irises are grown in New England and appropriate for local gardens. Members of the society will be on hand to help and provide information on the planting and care of irises.   • Friday, October 21, 6:00 pm – From Field to Fork: Candlelight Harvest Dinner at Verrill Farm

    Attend a Candlelight Harvest Dinner in Verrill Farms‘ decorated (and heated!) Concord greenhouse on Friday, October 21, beginning at 6 pm. Verrill Farm chefs prepare a dinner inspired by just-picked crops. The three course dinner includes appetizers, a main course (vegetarian option available) & side dishes made using their own crops, bread & dessert.   • Friday and Saturday, September 23 and 24 – Fall Bulb and Perennial Sale

    The Middlesex Conservation District, a not for profit environmental agency, will be holding its annual Fall Bulb and Perennial Sale on 9/23 (3-6pm) and 9/24 (8am-noon) at Verrill Farm, 11 Wheeler Rd, Concord, MA.  The sale features tulips, daffodils, specialty bulbs, iris and perennials; all proceeds benefit the District’s conservation programs.   • Saturday, July 25, 11:00 am – 4:00 pm – Iris Society Plant Sale

    Looking for some beautiful irises to add to your garden? Then come to the iris plant sale sponsored by the Iris Society of Massachusetts on Saturday, July 25, from 11 – 4 at Verrill Farm, 11 Wheeler Road in Concord. You will find a wide selection of bearded and Siberian named irises — all at low prices. All the irises are donated by members of the society and grow well in New England.   • Saturday, September 13, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm, and Sunday, September 14, 12:00 noon – 6:00 pm – Concord Farm & Garden Fair

    The Concord Farm & Garden Fair weekend will be held September 13 and 14.  On Saturday, from 10 – 2, shop at Ag Day Farmers Market in Concord Center.  Purchase local produce, meat, eggs, and flowers.  Nearby restaurants will offer Ag Day specials.  At the Farmers Market, see the Lexicon of Sustainability (TM) Pop-up Photo Exhibit, illustrating the new language of sustainability, on loan from the Museum of Science.  Then, from 2 – 5, there will be Food & Flower Tours.  Chart your own course between six tours designed to delight and inspire: chickens, bees, organic veggies, fruit trees and flowers, bio-diverse community and home gardens (including an herb CSA,) a harvest treasure hunt and solar fencing.  Pre-register for home garden tours at the Market or at www.concordfood.ning.com.  You may also get on your bike for a casual tour of Concord gardens and farms – email richard@playandlearntogether.com.

    On Sunday, from noon – 4, the photo exhibit continues at the Concord Art Association, 37 Lexington Road.  Then, from 1 – 4, six farms take you behind their farmstands.  Walk the fields and talk with farmers, learn how small-scale farming and selling works today, see historic greenhouses and vintage tractors, and gather eggs and harvest vegetables.  Cycle Concord’s foodscape with Richard (email above.)  At 4 pm, dine on produce donated by local farmers and prepared by local chefs at the Stone Soup Dinner at Verrill Farm.  Appetizers at 4, dinner served at 5.  Limited seating.  Tickets may be purchased in advance from Debra’s Natural Gourmet, Concord Cheese Shop, and Verrill Farm, with proceeds supporting Concord agricultural projects.  Visit www.stonesoupconcord.com for more details.

    Join The Culinary Guild of New England on Wednesday, August 13, from 6- 8  at Verrill Farm, 11 Wheeler Road in Concord, for a Field to Fork Dinner. Celebrate summer with a dinner in the field. This special meal will showcase the seasonal, just-picked crops grown right on the farm, and will be prepared by chefs from The Culinary Guild of New England.

    Cost for this event is $45 per person, and wine will be available for $5 per glass. Please note that our dinner will be held rain or shine and we will be sitting outside – so please remember to dress for the weather!

  • Tuesday, August 13, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Summer Harvest Farm to Fork Dinner at Verrill Farm

    You’re invited to join the Culinary Guild of New England and the AIWF (American Institute of Wine and Food) for a very special Summer Harvest Farm to Fork Dinner on Tuesday, August 13 at Verrill Farm, 11 Wheeler Road in Concord!

    Our guests will be treated to a pre-dinner tractor drawn hayride will take people through the fields to get a look at the crops. This will be followed by a dinner that showcases the seasonal and fresh produce grown on the farm and will be prepared Verrill Farm chefs Guida Ponte and Jennifer Verrill, along with Guy Crosby of Cook’s Illustrated.

    Please note, our dinner will be held rain or shine and we will be sitting outside – so please remember to dress for the weather!   • Saturday, July 27, 11:00 am – 4:00 pm – Iris Society Plant Sale

    The Iris Society of Massachusetts (ISM) is holding its biennial plant sale which will take place rain or shine from 11 am to 4 pm on Saturday, July 27 under the large open tent behind the farm store at Verrill Farm, 11 Wheeler Road in Concord.

    The large selection of reasonably priced irises are all from ISM members’ gardens and grow well in our area. There will be bearded irises, from tiny miniature dwarfs to tall beardeds, as well as beardless siberian irises, woodland iris cristata, and many other types. Prices for the irises generally range from $1 for the dwarf irises to $6 for the potted siberians.

    If you attended ISM’s iris show on Memorial Day last year and enjoyed the profusion of beautiful irises, you will find many of those same irises at the sale. ISM members will be there to answer questions. There will a demonstration on dividing old iris clumps along with planting tips. Free. For more information visit www.massirises.org.

  • Tuesday, October 18, 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm – Wild Edibles

    The American Institute of Wine and Food, with Newbury College, 129 Fisher Avenue in Brookline, will host a program on Tuesday, October 18, from 6:30 – 8:30 featuring one of the Garden Club of the Back Bay’s favorite speakers. Russ Cohen, professional environmentalist and wild food enthusiast, will be giving a talk, with slides, called “Wild Edibles I Have Known (and Eaten)”. He will also be selling his cookbooks, the proceeds of which go to one of the organizations that he supports. Sometime during the evening, snacks made from the recipes in his book will be passed. These will be prepared by Guida Ponte, a chef at Verrill Farm in Concord, assisted by some of the Newbury culinary students. The cost is $25, and the event will take place in Mitton Hall.
