  • Wednesday, April 6, 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm – Commercial Urban Farming and Design

Ver-Tex invites you for an exploration of how New England’s design professionals are tackling commercial urban farming within city limits. Green City Grower’s Jessie Banhazl will introduce cutting edge trends and materials used in commercial urban design during an interactive workshop, followed by Q&A, on Wednesday, April 6 from 4:30 – 6.

For seven years, Green City Growers has been educating designers, consumers and students to the ins and outs of successfully implementing urban agriculture. As a regional leader in urban farming, Green City Growers has provided the expertise and ongoing maintenance to make projects like Fenway Farms for the Boston Red Sox, and a 1/2 acre rooftop farm for Whole Foods Market Lynnfield a reality. Urban farming is taking off in some of the most densely populated places around Greater Boston in interesting and unexpected ways. This lecture will highlight the ever-changing landscape of growing technologies that is making this possible and how to apply these techniques in your community. Jessie is a past speaker with the Garden Club of the Back Bay.

Following the presentation, light refreshments and beverages will be served at the Ver-Tex Experience Center, 263 Summer Street, Boston. This is a free event, however due to limited space, an RSVP is required to attend the presentation and reception. To RSVP visit www.ver-tex.eventbrite.com

  • Saturday, June 15, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – 20th Annual South End Garden Tour

This year’s rain-or-shine, self-guided tour will kick off at the South End Branch of the Boston Public Library, at the corner of Rutland Square and Tremont Street, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 15. The tour will feature many beautiful, diverse gardens in the South End – from pocket-sized patio spaces to rooftop terraces to neighborhood parks and Land Trust community gardens. All of the gardens show the creativity of the owners and gardeners, and the joy they receive from developing and caring for a city garden.

The tour, a major neighborhood event, attracts garden lovers from all over the city as well as the suburbs, who are often surprised and amazed to find such creative use of outdoor urban space.  One of the biggest attractions of the South End Garden Tour is its yearly variety of gardens. Because the South End encompasses such a large area, the tour visits a different area of the neighborhood every year. The tour revisits the same portion only every four to five years. Within that cycle, the gardens have changed dramatically. It’s never the same tour twice! Back for 2013 – Artists In the Garden. South End artists will be creating paintings in the Tour gardens and other designated locations within the Tour area. The painting will be available for purchase at the reception immediately following the Tour. A reception/art sale will be held at City Year headquarters, 287 Columbus Avenue, Boston MA 02116 (corner of Clarendon Street).

Proceeds of the Tour benefit the South End/Lower Roxbury Open Space Land Trust, a non-profit organization supporting local community gardens and open spaces, through Boston Natural Areas Network. The SELROSLT was established to protect community gardens and pocket parks in this historic Boston neighborhood while working with the South End Landmarks Commission. Discounted tickets are available for $20.00 prior to the day of the tour at the following locations: Gracie Finn, 18 Union Park St. Coldwell-Banker, 633 Tremont St., Keller Williams Realty, 1313 Washington Street, Whole Foods Market, 15 Westland Ave., Mortgage Master, 671 Tremont St., Rondeau-Tierney Real Estate, 69 Appleton St. at Clarendon Street, TIPS Hair, 76 Dartmouth Street, and South End Realty Group, 476A Columbus Avenue. Tickets are also available online prior to the tour day.

Cost: $20 in advance/$25 day of tour. Sponsored by the South End Lower Roxbury Open Space Land Trust, you may log on to www.southendgardentour.org for more information.
