    On Sunday, February 27th, farm workers from Florida – the men and women who pick the tomatoes Bostonians eat from October to May every year — will be joined by consumers from across the Northeast in a march beginning at Copley Square, through downtown Boston, to the Brigham Circle Stop & Shop store, where they will hold a rally to demand that the supermarket chain join a growing partnership among farm workers, Florida tomato growers, and retail food giants aimed at ending decades of farm labor abuse in Florida.  Farm workers from the Coalition of Immokalee (FL) Workers, Slow Food president Josh Viertel, religious leaders, students, community activists from across the Northeast sponsor the march. “We pick Boston’s tomatoes, and for years those tomatoes have been harvested in Florida’s fields under unimaginably harsh conditions,” said Leonel Perez of the CIW. “Today, however, we are finally beginning to see the first glimmers of more humane treatment at work, thanks to the Campaign for Fair Food.”  Florida farm workers have long faced brutal conditions in the fields, including sub-poverty wages, widespread labor rights violations, and even modern-day slavery. Today, however, there is hope on the horizon, thanks to the efforts of farm workers, Fair Food activists, Florida tomato growers, and nine food industry leaders (including Whole Foods) who have joined in support of the CIW’s Fair Food principles, including a penny-per-pound piece rate wage increase, a strict code of conduct, a cooperative complaint resolution system, a participatory health and safety program, and a worker-to-worker education process. Last November, the CIW and the Florida Tomato Growers Exchange (FTGE) signed an agreement to extend these principles to over 90% of Florida’s tomato fields. And though the implementation of that agreement is being phased in gradually over the course of this season and the next, many real, concrete changes have already taken root on some of the state’s largest farms. The solution to farm labor exploitation and abuse contained in the Fair Food principles depends on the participation of all the major purchasers of Florida tomatoes. Each buyer must contribute its fair share – its penny-per-pound – for the pay raise to reach its full potential. Each buyer must commit to direct its purchases to those growers complying with the code of conduct – and away from those who don’t – for working conditions to get better and stay better. In the words of the FTGE’s Reggie Brown, “Everybody in the system has to be invested for it to work.” About the Coalition of Immokalee Workers: The CIW (www.ciw-online.org) is a community-based farm worker organization headquartered in Immokalee, Florida, with over 4,000 members.   • Thursday, April 29, 6:00 pm – What’s On Your Plate?

    Whole Foods again will sponsor a movie screening as part of its Let’s Retake Our Plates film series, this time on Thursday, April 29, at 6:00 pm at the Showcase Cinema de Lux Legacy Place, 950 Providence Highway in Dedham.  The film, What’s On Your Plate?, sees our food supply through the eyes of two 11-year-old city kids on a mission to discover where their meals really come from.  The budding food activists explore New York City, from farmers’ markets to school lunchrooms, and provide a fresh look at how a younger generation can influence what and  how we eat.  $10.  For more information, log on to www.letsretakeourplates.com.

    Whole Foods sponsors “Let’s Retake Our Plates” film series at the Boston Public Library, Tuesday, April 27, from 7 – 9 pm. When bulldozers threaten a 14 acre community garden in South Central Los Angeles, concerned citizens unite and fight for the country’s largest urban farm.  This 2008 film takes an unflinching look at the struggle between urban farmers and the city, and powerful developers.

    The Garden centers around a community’s struggle to hold onto a fourteen-acre garden in South Central Los Angeles. The community’s struggle received widespread attention in 2004-2006, when the farmers were fighting the city of Los Angeles and developer Ralph Horowitz to maintain control of the garden, ultimately working to raise funds to buy the land. The community garden was established on government property following the 1992 riots and was the largest of its kind in the U.S.

    The details of the story provide great footage: a wealthy developer engages in a shady real-estate deal with the city of Los Angeles to acquire the property, a city council member helps push through the secret deal, tensions between the Black and Latino communities complicate matters, while the impoverished Latino farmers at the heart of the story struggle not just for land but their livelihoods.

    The fourteen-acre garden was originally owned by developer Horowitz but the city acquired it under eminent domain, paying him $5 million. He sued the city unsuccessfully but ultimately struck a back-room deal to buy it back for $5 million, despite property values having skyrocketed in the intervening years. When the farmers are forced to consider buying the garden, Horowitz raises the price tag to $16.2 million.

    The film is moving and expertly captures the intricacies of the farmers’ struggle. Where another documentary filmmaker might have shied away from some of the nuance such as divisions between communities of color, filmmaker Scott Hamilton Kennedy delves into the tough subjects, highlighting complex racial and political dynamics.     The Allston Brighton Community Development Corporation, Allston Brighton Green Space Advocates, and Whole Foods are sponsoring a walk in support of the CDC’s open space advocacy work.  Register on line or by telephone by June 12.  Check in begins at 9:30 a.m., and walk begins promptly at 10.  Meet at Brian J. Honan Apartments on Everett Street, just south of the bridge over the Mass.
