    The Cambridge Center for Adult Education and instructor Denise Mickilowski will offer an eight week session in Flower Painting beginning June 13, on Mondays beginning at 2:30 pm (no class July 4), at the Brattle Street location. Spring is eternal. Capture your tulips , daffodils, etc. in luscious oils. Working from a variety of flowers starting from the simpler to the more complex flowers, we will work from either very good artificial flowers or from your favorite photos. If you choose to work from live flowers you can bring them on your own. Demos will be given at the start of every class. Bring supplies the first class.  $225.   • Monday, February 23, 5:30 pm – Gardening Intensively in Small Urban Spaces

    Come to the Cambridge Center for Adult Education on Monday, February 23 at 5:30 pm to learn how to plant, maintain, and harvest your garden to maximize yield. Learn how to site a good growing space in the city, use organic practices to combat pests and diseases, and boost soil fertility for a healthy and productive garden. We also will review creative urban crop options including micro-greens, fruit, mushrooms, bees, and more. The last class will include a canning demonstration along with cooking tips for the urban gardener. $155 fee.     Discover the essential elements and principles of floral design while creating three different styles of arrangements. You will learn how to achieve long-lasting freshness and select the perfect containers and flowers for the look you want to achieve. Seasonal flowers, foliage, and themes will be emphasized. At the end of each hands-on class, you will take home an arrangement you created to enjoy or give as a gift. A materials fee of $45 (cash or check only) is payable at the first class.     By carefully choosing trees, shrubs and perennials, we can have something of interest even in the coldest winter months! Wandflower, Galax urceolata, with its glossy foliage and rich green American holly, Ilex opaca, are just a couple of the plants that brighten the garden throughout the year. Don’t underestimate the charms of decorative bark, evergreen foliage, fruits, and dried leaves and flower stalks with a dusting of snow. Learn about some of the best native species, with an emphasis on fall and winter interest, and discuss design to ensure that your garden framework works well in the “off-season” as well as at the peak of bloom.     While we totally advocate purchasing your wreath from The Garden Club of the Back Bay, we acknowledge we don’t sell garlands, and understand you may prefer to make your own. Bring the beauty of the holiday season into your home with fresh decorations created by you. In this Cambridge Center for Adult Education class on Saturday, December 6, from 2 – 5, you will learn how to make a holiday wreath and garlands to adorn your home. Wreaths and Garlands are the perfect holiday decoration for your door, window frames, banister, mantel or even your desk. You will learn professional techniques from a variety of seasonal fragrant greenery, natural accents’ and festive accouterments. Holly, Boxwood, Juniper, Cedar Bough, Winter Berries, burlap, feathers, faux jewels and candy cane are just a small sample of the design elements. Join Faith Cass and enjoy an afternoon of creative fun, and leave with the decorations that will fill your home with the spirit of the holidays.     On Sunday, November 9, from 1:30 – 4:30 at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education, 56 Brattle Street in Cambridge, learn how to safely preserve high acid foods such as pickles and chutney. Students will learn about the principles of home canning, the canning process, equipment and budget alternatives, and specialty ingredients. We will also dispel several common myths from our grandmothers. Students will make two seasonal recipes in class and take home the products. $80 tuition.     Tuesdays, April 1 – June 3, 9:00 am – 11:30 am – Botanical Drawing

    Taking your inspiration from the historical tradition of botanical illustration, learn to draw botanical specimens in a wide range of drawing media, including graphite, pen and ink, colored pencil, and watercolor pencil. In this 10 week, Cambridge Center for Adult Education class, you will look at the work of great botanical illustrators. You will explore composition and personal style as you execute carefully observed perceptual drawings. The instructor, Sean Dunstan-Halliday, will supply some plants, but you also will be asked to bring in specimens. The class includes excursions to the Harvard Museum of Natural History.     In this multi-session New England Wild Flower Society and Cambridge Center for Adult Education course appropriate for beginners, learn different aspects of the landscape design process, with special emphasis on the use of native plants in the residential landscape. Workshop sessions focus on design methods involving site analysis techniques and schematic design tools. Consulting with the instructor, work on a project of your own choosing. Interspersed with design work are lectures on plants and habitats, including information on plant choice and placement in the landscape. A list of required materials will be discussed at the first class. Classes begin on February 4, from 5:45 – 7:45, and are taught by Karen Sebastian, principal, Karen Sebastian LLC Landscape Architecture. Classes will take place at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education on Brattle Street in Cambridge, and the fee is $209 for members of the sponsoring organization(s), or $245 for nonmembers.
