  • Thursday, June 20, 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm – Vinegar: How to Make it, Taste it, and Cook with it

    Jane Lyon, owner of Pioneer Valley Vinegar Works will present a Massachusetts Horticultural Society workshop on making your own herbal vinegars, using locally grown herbs, berries, and vegetables. She will discuss some of the many health benefits from using herbal vinegars in your daily diet. Be prepared to sample some of her original flavors and take home some delicious recipes to try.   • Saturday, June 8, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, and Sunday, June 9, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Antiques at Elm Bank

    The 8th annual Antiques at Elm Bank is slated for Saturday and Sunday, June 8th and 9th, 2013 on the beautiful grounds of Massachusetts Horticultural Society headquarters in Wellesley. Antiques will be displayed in outdoor tents surrounded by lush gardens with a select number of dealers to be showcased inside the Hunnewell and Education buildings at Elm Bank. More than 100 quality dealers will be on hand featuring hundreds of sought after items at Greater Boston’s and most magnificent outdoor summer antiques show. Antiques from the 18th to the mid 20th Century will be available including Federalist and Victorian furniture, European and Asian ceramics, china, sterling silver, art, estate jewelry, antique toys and much more. Everyone from the casual collector to the experienced investor will be able to find that precious treasure they have been searching for.

    Admission to Antiques at Elm Bank is $10 on Saturday (includes free re-admission) and $8 on Sunday. Children 12 and under receive free entry. Hours are Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Elm Bank Estate, 900 Washington St., Wellesley, MA just 15 minutes west of Boston.   • Friday, May 24, 8:00 am – 12:00 noon – Relax, It’s Only Garden Photography Workshop

    A half-day workshop beginning early Friday morning, May 24, will explore methods of seeing and of photographing, aimed at improving the way you photograph flowers and gardens. We will learn the proper use of the camera, the true value of the tripod, how to set up a shot and evaluate light using the meter and the eyes. We will explore depth of field, color, light modification and more. Describe order in the chaos, manage changing light, find and convey the emotion and energy in the scene you see.

    Chickens are a wonderful addition to any garden; they provide eggs, wonderful fertilizer, and lots of company! Learn the ins and outs of housing, feeding and tending chickens, and meet a couple of the ladies (hens).  The Massachusetts Horticultural Society continues its Thursdays at the Hort series at Elm Bank with Gretel Anspach, Lifetime Master Gardener and a Trustee of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, on Thursday, May 2, from 7 – 8:30.

  • Saturday, May 11, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm – Become a Locavore: Grow Herbs

    Come rain or shine! May 11, the Saturday before Mother’s Day, is the date The New England Unit of the Herb Society of America holds its famed Annual Great Herb & Heirloom Plant Sale. The Herb Sale is the Unit’s primary fundraiser, and monies raised support local educational outreach projects and the ‘Teaching Herb Garden’ at Elm Bank.

    This year’s Plant Sale Buyer is Nasrin Morovaty, a woman with an international outlook and tons of enthusiasm. Yes, we’ll have parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. Yet, imagine local heirloom tomatoes and an unparalleled selection of herbs (some are organic). Over 2000 herb plants will be available. Also, there will be unique Mother’s Day gifts for giving – custom-planted culinary and succulent containers, and free chives and ‘Johnny Jump Ups’ for the kids.

    Also, our locally grown, ‘Members’ Plants’ offer the buyer lovingly cultivated choices that are sure to thrive in our unpredictable New England climate. The International Herb Association has chosen Elder (Sambucus spp.) as Herb of the Year for 2013. Elderberries have been a folk remedy for centuries in North America, Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa for antioxidant activity, for coughs, colds, flu, bacterial and viral infections.

    Knowledgeable and helpful Herb Society Members will assist you in finding what will be just right for your garden, as well as information on how and where to plant. We offer ‘Personal Shoppers’ to help you with choices for kids patches and a plan for your herb garden.  The Sale is located in the big field just over the bridge, after entering the road to Elm Bank. Tents will be set up for shopping in all-weather conditions. Truly, come early for best selections.

  • Thursday, April 11, 10:00 am – Fabulous Gardens That Inspired Floral Designs

    The Metro District Annual Meeting will be held on Thursday, April 11 at 10:00 AM. at Elm Bank in the Hunnewell Carriage House. Elm Bank is located at 900 Washington Street, (Route 16), Wellesley, Massachusetts.  Our featured speaker, Thelma Shoneman, a nationally accredited Master Flower Show Judge, will be presenting a program, Fabulous Gardens that Inspired Floral Designs. Thelma recently visited six fabulous gardens in Oregon, Nebraska, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Maine. Thelma will speak about each garden and the unique attraction that inspired the “floral souvenir”! Each arrangement that she creates will include a different leaf manipulation, which she will demonstrate. These arrangements will be raffled at the end of the program.
    The luncheon will be catered by Baker’s Best of Newton and the charge for the luncheon is $25 per person. Checks should be made out to GCFM. For each attendee please list their name, email address, and their choice of lunch sandwich: chicken salad, roasted vegetable or turkey. Tell us if an attendee has special dietary restrictions.     Cold frames and hoop houses are great season extenders, allowing vegetables to be planted 2-4 weeks earlier than unprotected plants. They also play a key role in the transition of seedlings of all kinds from the sheltered windowsill / greenhouse environment to the outdoors.
