    Have you always wanted to grow dahlias but think they’re too much trouble? Did you know there are 18 different forms of dahlias in sizes from 2 inches to over 10 inches in diameter in nearly every color of the rainbow? This program will focus on how to identify each of the 18 different dahlia forms, their cultivation, care,dividing and storage techniques. While most flowers are winding down for the season in August, dahlias are just starting to hit their stride.     Learn all the tricks of the trade for creating a beautiful container full of these gorgeous xerophytes! The Thursday, November 15 demonstration by Carrie Waterman of Noanett Garden Club will cover appropriate species, containers, growing medium, topdressing and aftercare.

    Presentations will begin at 7pm and go until all questions are answered. The classes are priced at $12 for Mass Hort members and $15 for non-members unless otherwise indicated.     Exhibitor Meetings for Amateur Horticulture (January 10, 2013, 10am, Elm Bank) and the Design Divisions (January 17, 2013, 10:30am, Elm Bank) are already planned. Design Division II Chairman Julie Pipe has also launched a 6-week floral design course for potential new exhibitors in the Open Classes (Design Division II), which sold out in days! Due to the overwhelming success of this program a new Floral Design Course is being offered. It will be held Monday mornings from 10 am to 12 pm beginning on November 5th.   • Saturday, October 20, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Growing and Showing: A Fairy Garden Workshop for Kids

    This workshop is designed to introduce the concepts of horticulture, plant care, and exhibiting at a flower show to young gardeners. Registrants will learn about exhibiting plants in the Amateur Horticulture section of the flower show and then will put together a container planting that will be eligible for admittance to the Junior Horticulture Classes of the 2013 Boston Flower & Garden Show in March. Participants can choose from a Fairy Garden Container, a succulent container, or a plant or container of their own choosing.

    A two hour Massachusetts Horticultural Society workshop on creating the garden will take place at Elm Bank on Saturday, October 20th from 10 am to 12 noon. Mass Hort will provide soil, pots, and plants, as well as expert instruction on choosing, planting and exhibiting the garden in a flower show. Kids can also bring their own container (12″ wide or less) and plants that the presenters will help them to put together for a show stopping exhibit.

    A follow up workshop will take place on Saturday, February 2nd from 10am to 12 noon. Attendees at this session will learn the steps involved in taking their plants(s) from houseplant to flower show exhibit. Grooming and presentation techniques will be demonstrated and discussed. Participants will also have assistance in filling out the paperwork to submit their plants in next years’ show.

  • Friday, October 19, 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm – Seed Saving with Bryan Connolly, Massachusetts State Botanist

    Bryan Connolly is the Massachusetts State Botanist for the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program, Division of Fisheries and Wildlife. He will speak at Elm Bank on Friday, October 19, beginning at 6:30 pm, on Seed Saving.

    Bryan is also researching the taxonomy and uses of the native plant genus Aronia or Chokeberry for doctoral dissertation. He is the author of “The wisdom of plant heritage” the Northeast Organic Farming Association’s handbook on small-scale seed production, and a co-author of “Breeding Organic Vegetables Step By Step Guide” NOFA-NY, and “The Vascular Plants of Massachusetts: A County Checklist, First Revision”. His professional experience includes being a botanical consultant for the Connecticut Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, surveying rare plant populations for the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, coordinating a volunteer invasive plant survey at the New England Wild Flower Society, growing for FEDCO seeds, and instructing botany classes at Connecticut College and the University of Connecticut.

    The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts announces a series of three  hands-on Design Workshops for beginning and intermediate flower arrangers.  The first will take place Tuesday, October 16, from 10 – noon at a new location, the Hunnewell Building at the Massachusetts Horticultural Society’s Elm Bank in Wellesley.  Dates for the next two workshops are January 15 (snow date January 17) and April 9.  The fee for all three sessions is $125, and includes all materials and instruction.  No refunds will be given if you are unable to attend, but you may designate someone to attend in your place, or ask a friend who is attending to collect your flowers and container at the end of the class.  You will need to bring clippers, notebook, and a clean up bag.  Please mail your check, made out to GCFM, Inc., to Donna C.     Trish Wesley-Umbrell of Natick Community Organic Farm will speak at the Massachusetts Horticultural Society’s Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, on Thursday, September 13 beginning at 7 pm. The classes are priced at $12 for members and $15 for non-members unless otherwise indicated. There is no need to pre-register and you may pay at the class.  Trish will demonstrate the way to extend the season for your potted containers well into Thanksgiving.

    Mass Hort is excited to offer a new program this fall for anyone interested in learning the nuts and bolts of how to do a design for a flower show. This course will be held in the Putnam Building at the Gardens at Elm Bank on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9pm on the following dates:- 9/25, 10/2, 10/9, 10/16, 10/23 and 10/30. The first class will cover the basics of preparing and entering a show, choosing containers, and selecting plant material. Then, four classes will cover the most popular classes of design competition: traditional, creative, miniature, and craft. Then, for the final session, you’ll execute a design which will be critiqued by experts. The cost of the course is $60 for all 6 classes and will be filled on a first come, first served basis. There is a limit of 40 participants. You may register online or phone 617-933-4963 to register. Full payment must be made by the September 14thdeadline. This course is designed especially for those who would love to enter a flower show but are unsure of how to go about it or are timid and need support and encouragement.     The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts will hold a series of lectures and demonstrations on Flower Arranging three times in the coming season : Monday, October 29, Monday, January 28 (with a Tuesday, January 29 snow date), and Monday, March 25, from 10 – noon at the Hunnewell Building, Massachusetts Horticultural Society, Elm Bank, Wellesley, Massachusetts.  Join them for an interactive design experience.  The Massachusetts designers, among the best in the country, will teach you what they do and how they do it.  Top secrets are often revealed!  Reservations are being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, but no telephone reservations will be taken.  The total (and very reasonable) fee for all three sessions is $25, and you may make out a check payable to GCFM, Inc. and mail it to Thelma Shoneman, 21 Freedom Farme Road, Acton, MA 01720.  Please include your full name and address, telephone number, email address, and Garden Club affiliation.  You will receive an email confirmation when your check is received.
