  • Saturday, August 4, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Massachusetts Marketplace Festival at Elm Bank

    New England farmers, specialty food producers, and artisans will come together for the 16th annual Massachusetts Marketplace Festival on Saturday, August 4th from 10:00am-4:00pm at the Gardens at Elm Bank in Wellesley. Homemade crafts, soaps, baked goods, popcorn, teas, herbs, fine art, and annual plants from vendors located throughout Massachusetts and New England will be available for sampling and purchase.

    Celebrating the quality and abundance of local agriculture, floriculture, specialty foods, and crafts, the festival will include a full day of food sampling, shopping, and entertainment.

    Visitors are encouraged to bring a blanket and enjoy a picnic lunch in the gardens – bring your own, or purchase food from one of our local vendors. Guests may also want to spend some time exploring the many gardens of Elm Bank including the New England Trial Garden, the historic Italianate Garden, Weezie’s Children Garden, and the New England Herb Society Garden.   • Thursday, July 26, 7:00 pm – Dealing with 10 Tough Weeds

    Randy Prostak of the University of Massachusetts will take a commando stance on Thursday, July 26 at Elm Bank as part of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society’s Thursdays at the Hort series. What do you do when the weeds are threatening to take over? Randy Prostak’s presentation will focus on dealing with some of the toughest weeds to manage in lawns, landscapes and garden. He’ll take you through cultural, non-chemical, and herbicidal controls; and then field your questions with specific answers untainted by industry propaganda.

    Randy Prostak has been a University of Massachusetts Extension Specialist since 2000 where he specializes in weed management. He is a member of the Landscape, Nursery and Urban Forestry Team and currently serves on the Massachusetts Invasive Plant Advisory Group. He is an active member of the Northeastern Weed Science Society and Weed Science Society of America.   • Thursday, July 12, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Clematis: The Queen of the Climbers

    Clematis is the ‘Queen of the Climbing Vines’ and includes a collection of some 300 species and a thousand cultivars. Clematis is ideally suited to our New England climate and some cultivars bloom continuously for up to 16 weeks. As part of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society’s series “Thursdays at the Hort”, Cheryl Monroe will speak on Thursday, July 12 on this beautiful plant family.  Cheryl Monroe is a Master Gardener who has 50 Clematis on her property and maintains an on line blog – The Garden in the Burrow.  Presentations will begin at 7pm and go until all questions are answered.The classes are priced at $12 for Mass Hort members and $15 for non-members – no need to pre-register.   • Thursday, June 28, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Design and Installation of an Edible Native Plant Garden

    Kristin DeSouza, Senior Horticulturist and Plant Record Coordinator at Garden in the Woods, and past speaker with The Garden Club of the Back Bay, will present the June 28 installment of Thursdays at the Hort at Elm Bank in Wellesley beginning at 7 pm. Most of our daily foods are non- native introductions produced in mass quantity using fertilizers and pesticides. So what are our native edibles and how can we utilize them in the garden? Have you ever eaten a Pawpaw fruit…or sautéed Oyster Mushrooms freshly picked from your garden for your evening’s dinner? Senior Horticulturalist Kristin DeSouza will illustrate the design and installation process of the new edible plant garden at Garden in the Woods.   • Sunday, June 24, 9:00 am – 3:30 pm – Elm Bank Antique Auto Show

    Do you love old cars? Does the sight of a classic Corvette or a car with tail fins make you smile? Then be prepared to do a lot of smiling on Sunday, June 24, because that’s the date of the 10th annual Elm Bank Antique Auto Show.

    Scheduled to run from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the show will feature hundreds of classic cars, from hot rods and pace cars to lovingly restored autos from the ’50s and ’60s, when cars were more than just something to get you from point A to point B. There are competitions for ‘best of show’ in multiple categories.  Visitors will have the opportunity to talk with owners, look under the hood, and maybe even sit behind of their favorite vintage cars. There will also live music (oldies, naturally), food and drink, and a swap meet area where you can browse for memorabilia.

    As part of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society’s “Thursday at the Hort” presentation program, hear Ann McGovern of the Massachusetts Environmental Protection Agency speak on Thursday, June 21, beginning at 7 pm at Elm Bank on the topic of Composting. “Thursday at the Hort” presentations begin at 7 pm and go until all questions are answered.   • Saturday, June 9, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, and Sunday, June 10, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Antiques at Elm Bank

    The 7th annual Antiques at Elm Bank event is slated for Saturday and Sunday, June 9 and 10. More than 100 quality dealers will be on hand, featuring hundreds of sought after items at Greater Boston’s most magnificent outdoor summer antiques show.

    Antiques from the 18th century to the mid-20th century will be available, including Federalist and Victorian furniture, European and Asian ceramics, china, sterling silver, art, estate jewelry, antique toys and much more. Everyone from the casual collector to the experienced investor will be able to find that precious treasure they have been searching for.

    New to the show this year is an “Antiques Are Green” Children’s Festival of activities that is fun for the whole family. Dino the Dinosaur, symbol of the festival, reminds visitors that antiques are green, yet much newer than he is. On Sunday June 10 from 11am-1pm, entertainers will emphasize the theme of the event – namely that antiques are part of our past and part of our future. And, unlike dinosaurs that live on only in our imagination, antiques continue to provide function and enjoyment for years to come.

    Want to know what your own attic finds and family heirlooms are worth? Paul Royka, who has appeared as an appraiser on Antiques Road Show and is an acclaimed art and antiques expert, will tell you how much your often overlooked treasures are worth. The $5 fee per item benefits the Massachusetts Horticultural Library. Appraisal hours are 10-3pm on Saturday and 11-2pm Sunday.     This Thursday, June 7  lecture at Elm Bank in Wellesley, given by Irwin Ehrenreich and beginning at 7 pm, covers rose history, classification, the year in the rose garden from spring pruning to winter protection and finally, a photo gallery of some of Irwin’s rose gardens.  Irwin Ehrenreich, owner of The Rose Man, a rose care service on Cape Cod, is an American Rose Society Consulting Rosarian, Yankee District coordinator for Roses in Review, past president of The Seaside Rosarians, and Lower Cape Rose Society, as well as a Master Gardener.  Register for this Massachusetts Horticultural Society lecture at www.masshort.org.

    This Thursday, May 31 Massachusetts Horticultural Society presentation will be a talk and walk through the Bressingham Garden at Elm Bank, which Paul Miskovsky of Paul Miskovsky Landscaping, Inc. helped to build and continues to oversee. Paul’s discussion will focus on using the plants of Bressingham in the home landscape. Learn some key points in artful garden creation by choosing plants that complement and contrast each other in structure, texture, color and season.  Paul Miskovsky is the owner and driving creativity behind Miskovsky Landscaping. Come to Elm Bank on Thursday, May 24, beginning at 7 pm, to learn everything about the wonderful world of herbs – organic growing conditions (sunlight, soil, fertilizer, and water), harvesting techniques and preserving your herbal bounty (vinegars, oils, honeys, cleaning products and so much more).
