    Lucinda started her floral design and arranging career in 2000 after twenty years in senior financial management. She is a Senior Associate at the MFA and belongs to the Junior League and Milton Garden clubs. She does flower arranging demonstrations as well as events, weddings and funeral flowers for people who are connected to her business by word of mouth. Her arrangements have graced Green Sales, Annual Forbes House tour, galas, openings, Show Houses and St. Michael’s Flower Guild.

    Glen Lord, Horticulturist and Bonsai Expert

    Glen Lord is an avid bonsai artist with over 15 years in the art form. He spent seven years teaching and making bonsai at Bonsai West, the oldest bonsai nursery in the Northeast. He is also the bonsai specialist for the Larz Anderson Bonsai Collection that is housed at The Arnold Arboretum. Bonsai is the ancient Japanese method of growing and caring for a tree whose growth is restricted by the size of the shallow pot in which it is planted and by the pruning of its branches and roots. In this presentation Glen Lord, who consults for the Arnold Arboretum’s bonsai (Japanese) and penjing (Chinese) collection of dwarf potted plants, will speak first about the history of bonsai. He will then demonstrate the methods employed in creating and caring for a bonsai.

    Christine Paxhia is a life long gardener who turned her passion into a garden design and coaching business. After 30 years in corporate America, she became a Principal Master Gardener. She spends much of her time designing garden beds, and redesigning landscapes that have become old and overgrown. Her specialties are shade gardens, sun gardens and planters.
    On Garden Day, she will talk you through a few basic principals of designing and planting a garden bed for the shade and for the sun. She will discuss how to determine the site, preparing the site, soil and plant selection.
    Christine will do a planter demonstration with seasonal plants.

    Tower Hill Botanic Garden will host Ariella Chezar, author of The Flower Workshop, on Sunday, April 10 beginning at 1:30 for a talk, demonstration, and book signing.  With experience designing flowers everywhere from the White House to the Flower Shool New York, Ariella, one of the nation’s top floral designers, will discuss and demonstrate her approach to seasonally-influenced floral design. Her work has appeared in numerous publications including The New York Times, Martha Stewart Weddings, Sweet Paul Magazine, Modern Bride, Oprah Magazine, Garden Design, InStyle, and Town & Country.     In this Tuesday, November 24 workshop, from 6 – 8, Scott Clarke, a noted gardener and floral designer, will help you create a Thanksgiving centerpiece to adorn your dinner table. Learn how to prepare flowers for arranging, the art of creating a compelling design, and tips for extending the longevity of your creation.

    All materials will be provided including fresh flowers, grasses, and seasonal elements. No experience needed. $80 per person, $60 for Members of Gore Place. Gore Place is located at 52 Gore Street in Waltham.

    Join The Needham Garden Club on Tuesday, November 17 in the Community Room of the Needham Free Public Library, 1139 Highland Avenue in Needham. Julie Lapham will demonstrate her award-winning finesse as she composes several arrangements inspired by the bounty of the harvest and the upcoming holidays. She has been involved with flower arranging for 35 years and has exhibited widely throughout New England and beyond, including several international shows. Members and guests will have a chance to take home one of her designs that will use fruits, vegetables, flowers and foliage in elegant and new ways. Coffee, tea, and refreshments will be served at 9:30 a.m. The program, which is free, will begin at 10 am.

    Maureen Christmas, an accredited National Garden Club Flower Show Judge, will demonstrate floral designing for special events at the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library, 33 Marrett Road in Lexington on Wednesday, November 18. Her designs have been published in the National Garden Club’s Vision of Beauty Calendar and Design Magazine.

    Please join The Lexington Field and Garden Club at 9:30 AM for refreshments, followed by a short business meeting at 10 AM, and then the demonstration. Free and open to the public with ample parking and wheelchair accessibility.

  • Saturday, October 24, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Heirloom Pumpkin Harvest Centerpiece

    Make an autumn centerpiece that can be used for both Halloween and Thanksgiving, in this Tower Hill Botanic Garden class led by Betsy Williams on Saturday, October 24 from 10 – 12. Heirloom pumpkins are actually a hard-shelled squash. Flatter then Halloween pumpkins, they come in shades of celadon, forest green, cream and peach. An uncut heirloom pumpkin makes an elegant base for a striking harvest arrangement of richly colored dried flowers, herbs, grains, pods, nuts, mosses, berries and preserved leaves. The finished arrangement can be used as a harvest table accent for many weeks. All plant material, glues and Heirloom pumpkins are supplied by the instructor.     Would you like to learn how to create your own floral arrangements with “wow factor?” Have you ever walked through the floral design competitions at the Boston Flower & Garden Show or the Barnstable, Topsfield, or Marshfield Fairs and thought to yourself, “I could do this?” The Massachusetts Horticultural Society is ready to give you the tools to design your own arrangements!

    Beginning September 30 from 7 – 9 and continuing for six Wednesday evening sessions in The Parkman Room in the Education Building at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street, Wellesley, you’ll learn the nuts and bolts of how the basics of floral design, you’ll even learn how to enter a competition. The class will cover the basics: how to choose a container, select plant material, and entering a design show. Expert designers will teach you the basic elements of the most popular classes of floral arrangement: traditional, creative, miniature and table design.

    “Learning about Ikebana, the distinctive Japanese approach to the arrangement of Flowers, will give you a new appreciation of Nature. You will find more Beauty in the World.” On Thursday, June 18, from 6 – 8 at Basho Japanese Brasserie, 1338 Boylston Street in Boston, learn the Ohara-Style of Japanese Flower Arranging. Ohara is well-known for its landscape and moribana style. Design beautiful harmonious arrangements using a variety of plant materials and flowers. You will learn different techniques and use different flowers. All materials will be provided.
