    Join the Millis Garden Club on Wednesday Jan 16 (snow date January 17) and learn how to create flower arrangements that reflect your own personal style.  Julie Pipe, Central South Director for the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts and a member of the Holliston Garden Club, will present the program Finding Your Own Style. Using the color theme of Valentine’s Day she will discuss the mechanics, tools and flower choices required create table center pieces, a buffet table design and something a little different using an unusual container. So whether you already have a green thumb or aspire to have one you are invited to come and hone your skills. The program will begin at 7 pm at the Millis Town Hall, 900 Main Street, Room 130, in Millis, and is free. Call 508-376-6250 if the weather is questionable.

  • Saturday, December 8, 10:00 am – Holiday Table Garden

    Plant a fragrant and festive garden for holiday decorating. Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive in Boylston, will host instructor Betsy Williams for a workshop entitled Holiday Table Garden. We’ll combine chartreuse-colored, lemon-scented cypress trees with small evergreens, trailing ivies, white flowering plants and club moss in an attractive container. The garden is a beautiful, natural and, with proper care, long-lasting addition to your celebrations. Please bring an apron and floral scissors to class.     Decorate your Thanksgiving table with the bounty of the season! Make a beautiful, long-lasting centerpiece in the Williamsburg tradition. Betsy Williams will use fresh fall flowers, fruits, vegetables, fragrant herbs and seasonal berries combined with preserved leaves to celebrate our National Day of Thanks. We will create an arrangement that says abundance! Choose a container suitable for your table from a selection supplied by the instructor.     The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts announces a series of three  hands-on Design Workshops for beginning and intermediate flower arrangers.  The first will take place Tuesday, October 16, from 10 – noon at a new location, the Hunnewell Building at the Massachusetts Horticultural Society’s Elm Bank in Wellesley.  Dates for the next two workshops are January 15 (snow date January 17) and April 9.  The fee for all three sessions is $125, and includes all materials and instruction.  No refunds will be given if you are unable to attend, but you may designate someone to attend in your place, or ask a friend who is attending to collect your flowers and container at the end of the class.  You will need to bring clippers, notebook, and a clean up bag.  Please mail your check, made out to GCFM, Inc., to Donna C.     Instructor Laurie Marino will give a class at the Boston Center for Adult Education, 122 Arlington Street, on Saturday, October 13 from 10 – 12.  Tuition is $30 for BCAE members, $35 for non-members, and there is an additional materials cost of $18. Lose the bland bouquets and learn to create floral designs with flair! Using a step-by-step method, you will learn how to choose and process your flowers and what tools and containers work best to create arrangements that boast a distinctive visual appeal. We’ll explore the color, texture, and variety of spring flowers, and discuss the myriad styles of floral design, such as the English garden, Ikebana, symmetrical and asymmetrical design.  Register at www.bcae.org.

    Ever wonder how to turn a bouquet of flowers or flowers from the garden into an elegant centerpiece? Learn the essential elements and principles of floral design while creating three different styles of arrangements. You will learn how to achieve long-lasting freshness and select the perfect containers and flowers for the look you want to achieve. Seasonal flowers, foliage, and themes will be emphasized. At the end of each hands-on class, you will take home an arrangement you created to enjoy or give as a gift. A materials fee of $45 (cash or check only) is payable at the first class. Limited to 10.     Mass Hort is excited to offer a new program this fall for anyone interested in learning the nuts and bolts of how to do a design for a flower show. This course will be held in the Putnam Building at the Gardens at Elm Bank on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9pm on the following dates:- 9/25, 10/2, 10/9, 10/16, 10/23 and 10/30. The first class will cover the basics of preparing and entering a show, choosing containers, and selecting plant material. Then, four classes will cover the most popular classes of design competition: traditional, creative, miniature, and craft. Then, for the final session, you’ll execute a design which will be critiqued by experts. The cost of the course is $60 for all 6 classes and will be filled on a first come, first served basis. There is a limit of 40 participants. You may register online or phone 617-933-4963 to register. Full payment must be made by the September 14thdeadline. This course is designed especially for those who would love to enter a flower show but are unsure of how to go about it or are timid and need support and encouragement.     The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts will hold a series of lectures and demonstrations on Flower Arranging three times in the coming season : Monday, October 29, Monday, January 28 (with a Tuesday, January 29 snow date), and Monday, March 25, from 10 – noon at the Hunnewell Building, Massachusetts Horticultural Society, Elm Bank, Wellesley, Massachusetts.  Join them for an interactive design experience.  The Massachusetts designers, among the best in the country, will teach you what they do and how they do it.  Top secrets are often revealed!  Reservations are being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, but no telephone reservations will be taken.  The total (and very reasonable) fee for all three sessions is $25, and you may make out a check payable to GCFM, Inc. and mail it to Thelma Shoneman, 21 Freedom Farme Road, Acton, MA 01720.  Please include your full name and address, telephone number, email address, and Garden Club affiliation.  You will receive an email confirmation when your check is received.

    Join award-winning floral arranger Lynne Merrill for a series of floral design classes at Blithewold Mansion, Gardens & Arboretum, 101 Ferry Road (Route 114) in Bristol, Rhode Island. During this four-week series, Lynne will provide tips for harvesting, cleaning, and conditioning flowers as well as basic instruction of flower arranging. Each week will highlight a different design principle, in order to explore various floral design trends in color, materials, and arrangement styles. Then, using your own artistic expression, you can create a take-home centerpiece each session. Students will be asked to bring your own containers and shears.
