  • Monday, July 18 – Sunday, July 24 – Barnstable County Fair

    The Barnstable County Agricultural Society held its first fair, consisting primarily of livestock and handicraft exhibits, in October of 1844 at the County Court House in Barnstable Village. Proceeds collected from ticket sales and exhibitor fees are re-invested in the Fairgrounds for capital improvements and mortgage repayments, awarded as scholarships to young people pursuing careers in agriculture, conservation or elated fields, or distributed to charitable causes. The staff at the Barnstable County Fair and the Cape Cod Fairgrounds hope you have a great time at the fair, held this year July 18 – 24.   • Thursday, June 23, 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Blooming Art 2016 Opening Reception, and Friday, June 24 – Sunday, June 26 – Blooming Art 2016

    The Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club will sponsor Blooming Art 2016 on Friday, June 24 & Saturday, June 25 from 10 – 5, and Sunday, June 26 from noon – 3.  In addition, join them on Thursday, June 23 at 5 pm at The Old Mill in West Tisbury, 690 Edgartown-WT Road, for the gala opening reception, including hors d’oeuvre and libations.  Parking will be at the Grange Hall, 1067 State Road, and a van service will take guests to and from the Old Mill for the reception.  Admission to the public exhibit will be $5 at the door.  Tickets to the reception are $50, and may be purchased by calling Vito Palermo at 508-939-9522, or by emailing mvgcBloomingArt@gmail.com.

    Blooming Art is modeled after the Museum of Fine Art’s Art in Bloom show, an annual celebration of floral arrangements inspired by the Museum’s masterpieces. For four days in late June, the Old Mill in West Tisbury will be transformed into a gallery filled with the art of forty-two Vineyard artists displayed with interpretive floral arrangements created by Garden Club members. All artworks are for sale and proceeds benefit the Garden Club’s Scholarship Fund and the Old Mill Preservation Fund. Participating Artists:

    This major flower show is presented biannually at Heritage Museums & Gardens, 67 Grove Street in Sandwich, by members of the award-winning Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts Southeastern District Design & Horticulture Study Group.

    On Friday, September 25 – Sunday, September 27, from 10 – 5 daily, see beautiful, creative floral designs, lush seasonal horticulture, fascinating educational displays and artistic crafts alongside Heritage Museums & Gardens’ renowned collections.

    This year’s theme is “If I Ran the Zoo.” Animals, real and imaginary, will inspire designers and growers in their interpretations and will be a whimsical event for all to enjoy.

  • Friday, June 19 – Sunday, June 21, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm – Ogunquit Museum 5th Annual Art in Bloom

    Join the Ogunquit Museum of American Art, 543 Shore Road in Ogunquit, Maine, on Friday, June 19 through Sunday, June 21, from 10 – 5, for the 5th Annual Art in Bloom, produced and presented by the talented arrangers of the Piscataqua Garden Club, a member of the Garden Club of America.  One of the Garden Club of the Back Bay’s members, Louesa Gillespie, is also a member of Piscataqua, and highly recommends this three day celebration of fine art and interpretive floral arrangements inspired by works of art from the Museum’s exhibitions.  On Saturday, June 20, from 11 – 3, Lars Turin Clayworks of York, Maine will be in the Shop at OMAA.  Turin’s works in clay are created using a number of different techniques and processes, and evoke patterns found in nature.  Sponsored in part by Maine, the magazine, Kennebunk Savings, and Art Collector Maine.

    Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive in Boylston, continues its Flora in February program on the weekend of February 6 – 8 with another flower show entitled Rustic Elegance, this time featuring the work of garden clubs and individuals.  The times are Friday, 12 – 5, Saturday 9 – 5, and Sunday 9 – 4.  See floral artists shine during this weekend of creative inspiration.  For more information visit www.towerhillbg.org.

  • Wednesday, June 26, 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm and Thursday, June 27, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – A Seaside Journey

    The Osterville Garden Club will present a standard flower show, A Seaside Journey, at the Osterville Historical Museum, 155 West Bay Road, Osterville on June 26th, 1-5 pm and June 27th, 10-4 pm. Take a trip to Shanghai with floral designs interpreting the journey throughout the museum rooms. An extensive horticulture exhibit will be on display in the Boathouse of the museum.     Exhibitor Meetings for Amateur Horticulture (January 10, 2013, 10am, Elm Bank) and the Design Divisions (January 17, 2013, 10:30am, Elm Bank) are already planned. Design Division II Chairman Julie Pipe has also launched a 6-week floral design course for potential new exhibitors in the Open Classes (Design Division II), which sold out in days! Due to the overwhelming success of this program a new Floral Design Course is being offered. It will be held Monday mornings from 10 am to 12 pm beginning on November 5th.     So you see, even though the Show is months away, committee members are working hard and exhibitors are getting excited.  Mass Hort at the Flower Show is on!

  • Saturday, October 20, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Growing and Showing: A Fairy Garden Workshop for Kids

    This workshop is designed to introduce the concepts of horticulture, plant care, and exhibiting at a flower show to young gardeners. Registrants will learn about exhibiting plants in the Amateur Horticulture section of the flower show and then will put together a container planting that will be eligible for admittance to the Junior Horticulture Classes of the 2013 Boston Flower & Garden Show in March. Participants can choose from a Fairy Garden Container, a succulent container, or a plant or container of their own choosing.

    A two hour Massachusetts Horticultural Society workshop on creating the garden will take place at Elm Bank on Saturday, October 20th from 10 am to 12 noon. Mass Hort will provide soil, pots, and plants, as well as expert instruction on choosing, planting and exhibiting the garden in a flower show. Kids can also bring their own container (12″ wide or less) and plants that the presenters will help them to put together for a show stopping exhibit.

    A follow up workshop will take place on Saturday, February 2nd from 10am to 12 noon. Attendees at this session will learn the steps involved in taking their plants(s) from houseplant to flower show exhibit. Grooming and presentation techniques will be demonstrated and discussed. Participants will also have assistance in filling out the paperwork to submit their plants in next years’ show.

    A one time fee of $10.00 to help cover costs is due at registration. Children Ages 8-12 eligible to attend.  You can register or find out more information by calling Mass Hort at 617-933-4973.

    Norwood High School art students will once again join the Norwood Evening Garden Club to present Art in Bloom 2012. This is the eighth annual event where club members create floral displays to interpret the work done by students in Drawing and Painting III and 2D Digital Design III classes.

    The historic George H. Morse House at 1285 Washington Street in South Norwood will host this year’s Art in Bloom on Saturday, March 31 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, April 1, from 1:00-5:00 p.m. The public is invited. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.
