No, The Garden Club of the Back Bay isn’t holding a Black Friday sale. There is no place to line up or “score” a magnificent discount on wreaths. However, now that Thanksgiving is behind you, turn your attention to your holiday decor and order your wreath or wreaths today from https://bostonflora.com/shop/ Remember, all proceeds funnel directly to neighborhood beautification, and the November 30 order deadline for fully decorated wreaths is approaching.
We never miss a chance to publicize The Garden Club of the Back Bay’s ongoing fund raising project, the sale of Holiday Wreaths to friends and neighbors in the Greater Boston area. One excellent attribute of the Club is the effort put into recycling. The wreath below, which hung in a commercial space in 2017, is a bit different than the Club’s trademark all natural look, but was constructed with decorations recycled from decorations from past years. Some fruits had been discarded, some were scavenged from past projects, some were deconstructed from bargain bin decorations at shops which couldn’t find a buyer for them, but put together in a new and exciting way, with a vibrant bow to tie it all together. Members bring in clippings, old boxes of decorations, dropped cones from the forest floor – nothing is wasted. Buyers are encouraged to save the non perishable items at the end of the season and either use them in their own projects, or even return them to a Garden Club member for re-use the following year. Our planet is a fragile thing. Let’s not contribute to the landfill. Greenery can be composted, plastics cannot (which is why, for the most part, plastic accessories are eschewed.) In 2023, long time Garden Club of the Back Bay member Laurie Carter Noble passed away. Laurie will be remembered for many things, but she was especially noted for her beautifully designed and heavily decorated holiday wreaths created for the Club during its annual wreath week sale. The example below is an unexpectedly restrained design from 2014. A remembrance of Laurie may be found at https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/chatham-ma/hannelore-noble-11367075 Laurie always said the Season didn’t begin until she spent four days immersed in greens, cones, and ribbon in the basement of The First Lutheran Church of Boston. Now is the time to place your order for a 2023 custom holiday wreath from The Garden Club of the Back Bay. One good reason among many – you are assured of a beautiful wreath at 2022 prices. As anyone in Massachusetts can attest, the summer of 2023 brought massive smoke and haze from the blazing fires in Canada, which burned among other things – trees. Trees used for wreaths, for garlands, for Christmas trees. Prices of raw materials will of necessity rise due to limited availability – a classic “supply chain” issue we’ve learned to deal with over the past three years. The Garden Club discussed the potential cost rises, as yet undetermined by suppliers, and made the decision to hold the line on prices charged. Past customers exhibited such patience waiting for a return to full capacity that they deserve a break. New customers will benefit from the decision as well. So visit https://bostonflora.com/store and place your order.
There is still time to get your order in for a festive holiday wreath. We hope you had a great Thanksgiving and are ready to focus one final time on checking this seasonal staple off your “to do” list. Remember, we deliver in Back Bay, Beacon Hill, and the South End, and pick up is simple at The First Lutheran Church of Boston, 299 Berkeley Street. The Garden Club of the Back Bay will once again be selling gorgeous holiday wreaths, both decorated and undecorated, after a two-year hiatus due to COVID. We will be back creating at The First Lutheran Church, Boston, from December 5 – 8, and deliveries and pick up will begin in the afternoon of Tuesday, December 6 through Thursday, December 8. Responding to the new realities of social distancing, however, there are a few changes from the past.
Sales will move completely online, at https://bostonflora.com/shop/ If you absolutely must pay by check, please email info@bostonflora.com with the specifics of your order, and we will confirm availability, after which a check made out to The Garden Club of the Back Bay must be mailed to us at PO Box 991017, Boston, MA 02199.
Our offerings are streamlined. We will be selling a limited number of fully decorated standard (23” diameter) wreaths, with your choice of bow color and accent designations of Natural, Glamorous Glitz, or Designer’s Choice. Wreaths with bows and plain wreaths are available in two sizes, standard and large (29” – 30” diameter). There will be no special sizes available this year.
We are discontinuing poinsettia sales for 2022.
Prices have gone up due to the rising prices of our core supplies. We are still competitive with what local florists are charging. This is one of our two annual fundraising activities, and every penny earned goes back to the trees and neighborhood beautification. This is an all-volunteer endeavor. Prices range from $50 for a standard size undecorated wreath to $75 for a standard wreath with bow, up to $195 for a fully decorated, “museum quality” wreath. Large wreaths are $70 (undecorated) and $100 (large with large bow). Large wreaths cannot be ordered fully decorated. All wreaths will be trimmed and fluffed, with a hanging loop added for your convenience. Bows are also available in two sizes, standard ($25) and large ($30), with wires for attaching.
Because fewer decorators will be working at the Church to reduce crowding, we will be cutting off sales of fully decorated wreaths when we reach our expected capacity for fulfillment.
Confirmations of purchases and delivery times will be made by email.
For other inquiries, you may call our new phone number, 617-872-2697, but email is always preferred.
We know many of you found other sources for holiday decorations during the pandemic, but remember how beautiful our wreaths are, and the joy of having them delivered to your door.
Wright-Locke Farm offers a fun opportunity to create your own decorative wreath from natural, compostable materials. We will use twine, vines, ribbons, paper, sticks, dried flowers, ribbons and berries. Wreaths are completely compostable if you remove the ribbon.
As long as it is safe to do so, this workshop will be in-person, at the farm in Winchester. All necessary supplies will be provided and participants will go home with their own creations.
Cost: $45 – Register HERE. Nostalgic moment – below is a Garden Club of the Back Bay wreath from 2016.
We are sad to announce that The Garden Club of the Back Bay’s 2021 Holiday Wreath Project must be suspended due to COVID-19 restrictions and concerns. We are disappointed the neighborhood will be a little less festive in December without our beautiful wreaths. This decision was not made lightly – there were many factors and options considered, but ultimately we chose to take the most prudent approach for everyone’s safety.
For those who may be holding gift certificates, please email info@bostonflora.com. We will be in touch with you to discuss alternate redemption options.
Please stay safe and we wish you all the best this season.
