  • Holiday Wreaths 2020

We are sad to announce that The Garden Club of the Back Bay’s 2020 Holiday Wreath Project must be suspended due to COVID-19 concerns.  We will return in 2021.   We are disappointed the neighborhood will be a little less festive in December without our beautiful wreaths.

Gift certificates will be honored next year – just ignore the stated expiration date if you are a lucky winner or bidder.

Proceeds from our wreath sale have always gone directly to neighborhood tree care. To continue to support that program, we invite you to visit www.gardenclubbackbay.org/donate/  to make a donation.  If you don’t wish to give online, a check is always welcome at PO Box 991017, Boston, MA 02199.

Whether or not you choose to donate, please be sure to follow us on our website, on Facebook or Twitter, or subscribe to our Daily Digest, where we will feature From the Archives: Wreath of the Day beginning after Thanksgiving.  We can offer sponsorships for Wreath of the Day posts as well – perhaps your family or your business would like to be associated with this annual and very well followed tradition? If so, email info@bostonflora.com for more information.

  • Monday, December 2 – Thursday, December 5, 8:00 am – 7:00 pm – Holiday Wreath Making

    Monday, December 2 – Thursday, December 5, 8:00 am – 7:00 pm – Holiday Wreath Making

The Parish of The First Lutheran Church of Boston will again host The Garden Club of the Back Bay for wreath making on the lower level of Church, 299 Berkeley Street (on the corner of Berkeley and Marlborough Streets). We are very, very grateful. Please note that we are setting up the space on Sunday, December 1 and will be ready to work first thing Monday morning!  Monday participation by as many of you as possible is critical to our success. The hours are as follows:

    Monday, Dec. 2 – 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. (decorating)
    Tuesday, Dec. 3 – 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. (decorating)
    Wednesday, Dec. 4- 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. (decorating, delivery)
    Thursday, Dec. 5- 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. (decorating, delivery, clean up)

Please come to the side door on Berkeley Street. We’ll post a sign. Coffee and baked goods will be available each morning, and catered lunches will be delivered all four days. Dried materials and fresh greens can be delivered to the Church no earlier than Monday, December 2. Please have all decorations cleaned down – branches cut down, dead leaves removed – so we can contain the mess we inevitably make. Delicate materials can be laid flat in sweater boxes or gently stacked in cardboard containers. We are going to need as many dried items as we can collect, and we especially want interesting fresh evergreen boughs and holly. Sturdy pine cones were in short supply at the end of last year, and we did a wholesale cleaning out of old dried flowers and dried fruit before storing supplies, so a fresh batch will be welcome.

Bring clippers and scissors if you have them, labeled with masking tape for ease of identification. Aprons are also a good idea. Dress comfortably! We need everyone’s help, whether you decorate, deliver, organize, make telephone calls confirming delivery, or sweep. Contact info@bostonflora.com if you can take a delivery shift. Otherwise, we’ll see you on Monday. Non Club members are welcome to join us. Thank you.

  • Holiday Wreath Sale – Auction Reminders

The Garden Club of the Back Bay contributes many wreath gift certificates to not for profit organizations throughout eastern Massachusetts (and even to a few farther afield). They are auctioned off and then, sometimes, those certificates sit in someone’s drawer and are forgotten. If you have been a lucky winner, please remember to contact us with your information and wreath design preferences before it’s too late.  Since we specialize in one of a kind creations, we love to have the opportunity to gather a few special decorations before we are in the middle of wreath making in December. Deadline for fully decorated wreath orders is November 30, so email info@bostonflora.com right away. If you haven’t been fortunate enough to win a wreath, you may buy one at https://bostonflora.com/shop.

  • Tuesday, November 20, 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm, and Wednesday, November 21 – Saturday, November 25 (excluding Thanksgiving), 10:00 am – 5:00 pm, and Sunday, November 25, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm – Nantucket Festival of Wreaths

The Festival of Wreaths is the Nantucket Historical Association’s kickoff celebration for the holiday season. This community event features an array of wreaths beautifully crafted by local businesses, non-profits, schools, and organizations that are displayed during the week of Thanksgiving. Visitors can bid on their favorite wreaths in a silent auction to benefit the NHA’s year-round outreach efforts. From traditionally-decorated greens to unconventional materials, all of the Festival of Wreaths entries capture the creativity of Nantucketers! This year, celebrating the 20th anniversary, the Preview Party will take place at the Whaling Museum on November 20 from 5:30 – 7:30. A special thank you to the 2018 Festival of Wreaths Chairs, Donald Dallaire and David Handy. If you are interested in becoming a 2018 Wreath Designer, contact Stacey Stuart, Director of Corporate Development, at sstuart@nha.org. • Holiday Wreaths 2018 – We’re Back!

    Holiday Wreaths 2018 – We’re Back!

2018 Order Forms will soon arrive in the mailboxes of past customers and Club members, and for those of you new to the game, now is the time be part of the exclusive group of holiday wreath and poinsettia buyers supporting the charitable work of The Garden Club of the Back Bay. Every penny of our net proceeds goes to neighborhood beautification projects and area-wide grants to not for profit horticultural organizations with missions mirroring our own, especially in support of trees. You may order on line, of course, in our store (www.gardenclubbackbay.org/shop), and if you search on our website you may view hundreds of photos of past wreaths. Remember, you are not ordering any specific style – our volunteers never copy, and each wreath is original – but if you especially like a specific wreath, we can assign your order to a decorator who specializes in that particular look.  Questions? Email info@bostonflora.com.

  • Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, November 24 – 26, 11:30 am – 2:30 pm – A Gardener’s Wreath

Tower Hill Botanic Gardens has scheduled a three hour workshop on wreath making which you may take on any one of three different days, November 24 – 26, with instructor Karen Perkins. Design a beautiful botanical wreath from a colorful assortment of choice evergreens, including some collected on the grounds at Tower Hill. Accent your wreath with a variety of dried materials; bow making instructions will be included. This unique outdoor wreath is made on a foam ring which can be moistened to last all winter. Bring pruning shears, wire cutters, and a towel. All materials included. The class begins each day at 11:30. $65 for Tower Hill members, $75 for nonmembers. Register online at www.towerhillbg.org.

Karen Perkins, former Director of Education at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, has been teaching folks how to fashion singularly beautiful holiday decorations for almost 30 years. If you can’t make this event, feel free to order one of the Garden Club’s magnificently decorated wreaths, such as the one pictured below, at www.gardenclubbackbay.org/shop

  • Holiday Wreaths: Planning Ahead

We all know how busy November and December become.  We’re shopping, we’re cooking, perhaps we’re traveling, we’re attending parties, we’re standing in line at the post office – and somewhere in there we are getting a flu shot.  So let’s take some stress out of the equation.  Is there a teacher, a co-worker, a baby sitter, a stylist, a neighbor, who is on your gift list? Let’s send them a lovely wreath with a bow (only $45!) in the beginning of December – you will be the holiday hero (or heroine.) We attach a beautiful gift card and can even deliver it if they live or work in the Back Bay, Beacon Hill, or South End.  Or you may pick it up at The First Lutheran Church of Boston, 299 Berkeley Street, and do the presenting yourself.  Visit https://bostonflora.com/products-page/ to see photographs, and to order online or print an order form.  We are showing a fully decorated wreath ($100) below, in case you decide to splurge.

  • Holiday Wreaths 2016 – Autumn Splendor

Holiday Wreaths 2016 – Autumn Splendor

Once again our Club is gearing up for Wreath Week, December 5 – 8, and with pine cones, nuts, and seed pods available for the taking on the ground, our hunter/gatherers are combing the woods for materials.  We specialize in natural decorations to enhance our basic balsam background, and each decorator takes his or her own path when deciding how to embellish a fully decorated wreath.  Some are minimalists, but many feel the customers deserve their money’s worth and make sure the wreaths are fully festooned.   A few frankly artificial pieces may be incorporated, such as the tiny birds pictured in the detail below, but we strive to be tasteful.  Order your custom wreath online today at www.gardenclubbackbay.org, or print the order form and mail with your check before November 30.

  • Holiday Wreaths 2015 – Where We Are This Week

Holiday Wreaths 2015 – Where We Are This Week

There are many interesting garden related events taking place in the beginning of December, but luckily, many Garden Club of the Back Bay members and friends have decided to dedicate a portion of their week to our Annual Wreath Project, taking place today, December 7 through Thursday, December 10 at The First Lutheran Church of Boston. We’ll be decorating and delivering over 400 wreaths to friends and neighbors. While fully decorated wreaths are only available by advance order, a simple wreath with or without one of our signature bows may be purchased on site at the Church, which is located at 299 Berkeley Street, on the corner of Berkeley Street and Marlborough Street. Do stop by and view our operation if you are able, and put your name on our mailing list for next season. You can choose your ribbon and walk away with a fragrant holiday treasure. • Holiday Wreaths 2015 – Last Chance

Holiday Wreaths 2015 – Last Chance

If you link today to our on-line store, https://bostonflora.com/shop/, you will still be able to order a fully decorated holiday wreath from The Garden Club of the Back Bay, but on line orders close this weekend as we prepare our paperwork and begin loading in to The First Lutheran Church of Boston for next week’s decorating extravaganza.  If you have questions, email info@bostonflora.com. We heard from a friend who had moved to Washington, DC and began to look around for a local equivalent to provide her with a wreath, and couldn’t find any which matched the standard to which she had become accustomed.  Boston is lucky indeed to have us as a wreath resource, at such competitive prices.  So act now – remember, net proceeds go directly to our street tree projects in the Back Bay and in surrounding neighborhoods. We’ll be officially announcing our Clarendon Street tree initiative soon, and your support is critical to our success.
