Get outside on Thursday, January 10, beginning at 6 pm, for this event and temporary art installation, Color Commons, by New American Public Art (NAPA) designed for interaction with the Light Blades on the Rose Kennedy Greenway, at the Rings Fountain between Milk Street and State Street.
At the opening, NAPA will unveil a phone number that will allow park users to text message a color to the Light Blades and see them instantly change. Bring your cell phone to the opening to participate in a texting battle and see the resulting light show as the Light Blades respond to a crowd of texts. Come out to the Boston Harbor Islands Pavilion (between State Street and Atlantic Avenue in Boston) on Wednesday, December 5 at 6 pm for the opening of Lightwaves, two temporary art installations curated by Boston CyberArts on the Rose Kennedy Greenway. This August the ICA presents the first solo exhibition in the United States of Brazilian twin brothers Otavio and Gustavo Pandolfo. The Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy is excited to partner with the ICA as a site for an accompanying public mural. The 70′ x 70′ temporary mural is in process and will be displayed in Dewey Square Park on the Air Intake Structure located between Summer and Congress Streets.
Best known as Os Gemeos (pronounced “ose zhe’-mee-ose”, meaning “the twins”), the two artists started painting the mural Wednesday, July 25 and plan to complete the artwork by Friday, August 3. We invite you to watch as this giant mural takes shape! The Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy will host an opening event in celebration of the mural on Wednesday, August , with activities on Dewey Square lawn including art projects for the kids, music and cuisine all inspired by the Brazilian twins’ mural. An evening after party will follow. Circle The City will feature a car-free corridor on Sunday, August 5, between 10 – 1, along the Rose Kennedy Greenway downtown. Come out and walk, bike, roll and play on Open Streets. All Circle The City events will include free live performances, outdoor fitness, dance and yoga classes, Farmer’s Markets, bike clinics, children’s activities, culinary demonstrations, roller skating, hula hooping, and countless other opportunities to have fun on the streets and in the parks. A 2012 Urban Signature Project of the America’s Great Outdoors Initiative, Circle The City is a collaborative venture of the Emerald Necklace Conservancy, the Boston Collaborative for Food and Fitness, LivableStreets Alliance, Franklin Park Coalition and the City of Boston. Demonstrating an innovative model connecting conservation and recreation, Circle The City will serve as a national leader for exemplifying healthy living in the city and improved accessibility to urban green spaces. With community-building, healthy lifestyles and park accessibility at the heart of these events, Open Streets engage participants of every age and background. The goals of Circle The City focus on encouraging healthy engagement with our parks by all residents of Boston, and include:
Improving neighborhood accessibility to parks and open space.
Gathering the community for free activities and performances on safe, car-free streets.
Increasing the involvement of youth in our parks through summer employment programs and regularly scheduled activities for children.
Circle The City is not a parade, nor is it a race. Rather it is a unique opportunity to safely enjoy the streets and explore new neighborhoods and parks.
Join the New England Aquarium on Central Wharf on Sunday, June 3, from 11 – 4, to experience a full line-up of World Oceans Day activities, including submersible robots, cooking demonstrations, hands-on activities for kids and plenty to learn about ocean animals and habitats. All World Oceans Day activities are free and open to the public. As an added bonus, look for Calvin, the Aquarium’s inflatable 42 foot long right whale on the Rose Kennedy Greenway at Milk Street. Garden Club of the Back Bay member Janine Mudge-Mullen of City Garden Ideas has put together a program on Saturday, May 5, from 10 – 12 at First Church in Boston, 66 Marlborough Street.

Ellen Abdow, Owner of Perennial Gardens. Ellen will create a container garden before our eyes with step-by-step instructions and offer stories about the hottest trends in gardening.
Tom Smarr, The Garden Concierge and former Superintendent of Horticulture at the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Tom will offer an overview of gardening basics including tools and soil plus tips to choosing hardy plants for sun and shade. He’ll also talk about the boom in verticulture, a new trend focused on growing plants on the vertical.

Groundscapes Express has worked on many ecosystem restoration projects throughout the region. Groundscapes’ approach treats the whole site as an ecosystem or a sub-watershed for greatest success. Projects implement best practices for improved water quality, soil compaction, invasive species, and erosion control. At this Roundtable presentation on Thursday, January 19, from 1 – 3:30 pm at the Wellesley College Botanic Gardens’ Visitors Center, 106 Central Street in Wellesley,, John Engwer will describe ecosystem restoration projects at sites including Wellesley College, Kent Hospital, the Rose Kennedy Greenway, Mount Auburn Cemetery, and Fresh Pond Reservation. Though the sites differ widely, the issues of soil compaction, stormwater management, and invasive species control are common to all. Registrations are limited – call 617-436-5838, or email ela.info@comcast.net. $20 ELA or Wellesley Friends of Horticulture member price, $25 for nonmembers.
Ice Chimes is going up on Greenway this week. Come out for the grand unveiling of this winter sculpture next Thursday at 6PM. Join us to celebrate public art on the plaza followed by networking and a nightcap at Vintage Lounge (72 Broad St). Ice Chimes by Moskow Linn Architects and Payne Bouchier Fine Builders will be on display in the Wharf District Parks from December 8, 2011 – April 2012. The sculpture is 20 feet high and collects precipitation and encourages icicle growth along a series of metal chimes. You’ll find it at Rowes Wharf Plaza, between High and Broad Streets. The opening will be Thursday, December 8, from 6 – 7 pm.
The Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy is seeking volunteers to help create a color stick garden installation on the Greenway. The red stick/blue stick garden is intended to bring color and interest to the garden beds during the winter months. Volunteers are needed for painting sticks on Wednesday and Friday, November 9 and 11, from 9 – 11 at 185 Kneeland Street. To sign up, or for more information, contact Jenny at jwhelen@rosekennedygreenway.org.
