  • Tuesday, October 4, 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm – Greenway Conservancy Annual Meeting with Patrick Cullina

    Join the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy for the Annual Meeting on Tuesday, October 4, beginning with a reception at 5:30 pm, in the first floor conference room at 185 Kneeland Street.  Hear about the successes of the 2011 season on the Greenway.  The reception will be catered by Greenway food vendor BBQ Smith.  Special guest speaker Patrick Cullina (below,) a horticultural designer, photographer and lecturer who has served as Vice President of Horticulture and Park Operations for Friends of the High Line in New York City, and as Vice President of Horticulture, Operations and Science Research at Brooklyn Botanic Garden, will speak at 6 pm.  The program is free.  Please rsvp to Jenny at jwhelen@rosekennedygreenway.org.

  • Tuesday, September 20, 6:30 pm – Honey Harvest Dinner

    The InterContinental Hotel’s fifth floor roof deck apiary houses 100,000 plus bees, pollinating a four to five mile radius of the hotel, which radius includes the Rose Kennedy Greenway.  In honor of September being National Honey Month, Miel at the InterContinental will be hosting a Honey Harvest Dinner.  The evening includes a cocktail reception, a tutorial on bees, urban bee keeping, and an overview on honey.  Dinner is $75 per person and includes the cocktail reception and wine pairings.  Reservations can be made by calling Miel directly at 617-217-5151.

  • Through October, 2012: Urban Garden Art Installation

    The Rose Kennedy Greenway announces a sixteen month art installation. The Fort Point Channel Parks have been transformed. The recent installation of three contemporary sculptures based on botanical forms, together suggest a fantastic garden amidst the urban-scape of Boston. The Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy, deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum and Boston Properties are proud to present Urban Garden, a sixteen month exhibition of sculpture on the Greenway.  Urban Garden features the work of internationally acclaimed artists, Tom Otterness, John Ruppert (his Pumpkins is below, in a photo by C. Ely) and James Surls and is curated by deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum with generous support from Boston Properties. The exhibition can be viewed in Fort Port Channel Parks through October 2012.

  • Garden Club of the Back Bay Announces Annual Grant Recipients

    Thanks in no small part to the continued success of our recent Twilight Garden Party, The Garden Club of the Back Bay announces that the following organizations will receive a total of $20,000 in financial grants for 2011:

    The Commonwealth Avenue Mall Committee – $5,000 to be credited to the Hereford Street to Massachusetts Avenue  air spading project fund.

    The Friends of the Public Garden – $4,000 to continue the inoculation of elms at risk for contracting Dutch elm disease.

    The Esplanade Association – $2,500 for the Elliot Oval Landscape Restoration, planting new trees and treating trees already on site, near the newly restored Community Boating docks.

    Emerald Necklace Conservancy – $2,500 for a planned meadow to be developed with native species and wildflowers.

    Boston Nature Center/Massachusetts Audubon Society – $2,500 to support six full scholarships for its summer camp.  The children attending the camp range in age from 5 to 14 and are from the local neighborhoods of Mattapan, Roslindale, and Jamaica Plain.

    Charles River Clean Up Boat – $2,000, to help continue the project of keeping the Charles River trash-free.

    Urban Ecology Institute $1,000 to help with its Grow Boston Greener tree planting initiative.

    The Boston Committee of the Garden Club of America – $500 to the Blossom Fund, which is accumulating funds over a five year period to be awarded to a deserving project on or about the Rose Kennedy Greenway.

  • Thursday, June 2, 11:00 am – Boston Harbor Islands Pavilion Opening

    Join the Boston Harbor Alliance for an opening celebration on Thursday, June 2 at 11 am.  Governor Deval Patrick, Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino, Ms. Victoria Reggie Kennedy, and other dignitaries will join Boston Harbor Island Alliance and National Park Service staff on the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway to open the new $5,000,000, 2,500 square foot Boston Harbor Islands Pavilion.  This pavilion is the first structure to be built on the Rose Kennedy Greenway and will be a new gateway for residents and tourists to the Boston Harbor Islands National Park area.  The structure is located in the Wharf District Parks (between State Street and Atlantic Avenue.) We have to admire the contractor who got away with charging the government $2,000 per square foot.  Come view our tax dollars at work.

  • Saturday, June 4, 11:00 am – 7:00 pm, and Sunday, June 5, 11:00 am – 6:00 pm – FIGMENT Boston

    Join more than 80 artists for two days of FREE public participatory art on the Greenway. Projects in every conceivable medium will surprise and delight you. Experience art in a whole new way. You are invited to bring something to share. FIGMENT is appropriate for all ages.  FIGMENT Boston will take place at Fort Point Channel Parks, Dewey Square Park and Chinatown Park on Saturday, June 4 from 11 – 7, and on Sunday, June 5, from 11 – 6, and admission is free.  For more information, log on to www.rosekennedygreenway.org.

    The Greenway Conservancy is hosting a series of public meetings to discuss a new custom carousel on the Greenway.   • Thursday, October 28, 11:30 am – 6:30 pm – Fall Harvest Fun and Greenway Halloween Maze

    The hay is being harvested, the pumpkins are being picked, and the DJ is thumbing through the tunes all in preparation for next week’s Fall Harvest Fun and Greenway Halloween Maze at Dewey Square Park.

    You don’t want to miss Fall Harvest Fun at the Boston Public Market on Thursday, October 28 from 11:30 – 6:30! Enjoy the bounty of the market, lose yourself in the Greenway Halloween Maze, paint a pumpkin, and try Halloween-inspired treats from Clover and Beantown Franks n’ Spuds. Special treats to those in costume!

    The Halloween Maze, a 50′ by 50′ maze made of salt marsh hay (yes, it’s sustainable), will remain open through Sunday, October 31 and is free to all. This free event is made possible with generous support from Liberty Bay Credit Union.   • Wednesday, October 27, 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm – Community Meeting re: Carousel on the Greenway

    Join The Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy on Wednesday, October 27  from 5-7 PM for the second community meeting to learn more about the Conservancy’s feasibility study for a custom-designed children’s Carousel on the Greenway. You’ll discuss the location and site layout of the Carousel, share feedback and designs from the Children’s Workshops, and talk about ideas for the Carousel theme and characters.

    Can’t make the meeting? The Conservancy wants to hear from families and children of all ages. Please send your thoughts to carousel@rosekennedygreenway.org. Need inspiration? The current Greenway Carousel closes at the end of this month and won’t come back until the bulbs are blooming.

    Where: Wharf District Parks across from Faneuil Hall Marketplace
    When: The Carousel is open 12-8PM Sunday – Thursday; 11AM-8PM Friday and Saturday except during extreme inclement weather.
