    Mushrooms are a fascinating part of the diverse habitats found in Berkshire County. Come to Bartholomew’s Cobble in Sheffield, Massachusetts on Saturday, August 27 from 10 – 12 and learn about the different varieties of mushrooms in our community and how to identify them.   • Thursday, August 4, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Garden Mixology

    The Trustees of Reservations and the Sustainable Business Network of Massachusetts are excited to present a series of Garden Mixology Classes this summer. Attendees will learn how to craft 3 unique cocktails using local spirits while enjoying appetizers from local caterers and restaurants, all while in a unique urban garden setting.

    Join them on Thursday, August 4 in Northampton Street Community Garden in the South End for the third class. Privateer is our featured rum distiller and delicious Filipino cuisine will be provided by Pamangan.

  • Tuesday, July 19, 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm – Powisett Pesto

    Pesto is traditional made with basil, pine nuts, olive oil, garlic, but on Tuesday, July 19, beginning at 6:30 pm at Powisset Farm in Dover, learn how versatile pesto can actually be and how many different versions you can make. We will be using veggies and herbs from the farm and participants will get to leave with their creations and new ideas. Please note that most classes include options for vegetarians and vegans.

    Registration is required 2 days prior to a class or event.     Learn how to make yogurt, butter, and kefir (also known as fermented milk) in your own home. On Saturday, July 16, from 10 – noon, the Trustees of Reservations will be using local milk from Powisset Farm, 31 Powisset Street in Dover, Massachusetts, to teach you the basics, and participants will get to taste and take home samples.

  • Thursday, July 14, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Ornamental Vines

    Come to the Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate in Canton on Thursday, July 14 between 10 and noon to explore the ornamental characteristics of climbers like honeysuckle, wisteria, clematis, and other (unique!) lesser-known species. In the indoor hour long talk, you will learn how vines climb, the support structures needed for each type of vine, best planting practices and maintenance. Jen Kettel, horticulturist, arborist and teacher, formerly the Arnold Arboretum’s Horticulturist, will be our instructor for this exciting new program. We will take to the paths along the formal and kitchen gardens and find examples of what you might like to do at home.     Join local bee keeper Bob Simek on Sunday, July 10 at noon to hear his story of getting into the world of bee keeping. We’ll walk into to see his hives, and have time for questions an answers afterwards. Meet in the parking lot of Rocky Woods in Medfield, Massachusetts. All ages welcome. Free.     Saturday, July 2, 9:00 am – 12:00 noon – Summer Butterfly Count

    On Saturday, July 2 from 9 – noon, join The Trustees and the North American Butterfly Association for an annual summer butterfly count at Appleton Farms, in Hamilton and Ipswich, Massachusetts. Appleton’s wet meadows and farm fields provide important habitat for many common and uncommon butterfly species. Trustees Ecology Program Director Russ Hopping and Massachusetts Butterfly Club President Howard Hoople will orient the group with an Introduction to butterflies before setting out for the count. Participants should wear long pants, sunscreen and proper clothing to be walking through fields of tall grass. Bring a lunch.     Project Bread Chef Vanessa LaBranche leads this free cooking demonstration at The KITCHEN at Boston Public Market to teach market patrons how to prepare healthy meals on a budget. Enjoy simple, tasty recipes that do not require a lot of time, skill, or money to prepare. Classes (Thursday, July 7, two sessions starting at 11:45 and 1:00 pm) are open to all. Project Bread takes a fresh approach to ending hunger. They believe that the opposite of hungry isn’t simply full – it’s healthy. And because there’s no single face of hunger, we develop multiple solutions that meet people where they are – solutions that provide people of all ages and walks of life with sustainable, reliable access to nutritious food.   • Thursday, June 16, 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Landscape for Leisure

    Explore on foot the magnificent grounds of Castle Hill on the Crane Estate in Ipswich designed first by the Olmsted Brothers and later Arthur Shurcliff. Hear about the plans, process, and differences of opinions when the designing process began in 1909. Walk through the newly restored Casino Complex and Italian Gardens, and find out why there seems to be ancient ruins on the property. This Trustees of Reservations program will take place Thursday, June 16 from 3 – 4 (and at various other times throughout the summer – contact 978-356-4351, x 4049 for details) and is $10 for Trustees membrs, $15 for nonmembers.     Bartholomew’s Cobble is known for its extraordinary diversity of fern species. During this Trustees of Reservations hike and drawing workshop with our friend, renowned ecologist and botanical artist Elizabeth Farnsworth, learn identification strategies for ferns,and how to apply these identification skills to create beautiful, accurately-detailed botanical drawings of ferns.
