Tuesdays, beginning September 6, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm – New England Farms & Food Lecture Series

Come to the Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate in Canton, Massachusetts and hear about sustainability, farms, food, and natural products. Let’s walk through the fields and forests. A different topic each session: wild foraging, beekeeping, and herbal medicines are among the areas we will cover with experts such as author Russ Cohen and Muddy River Herbalist Jenny Hauf (pictured – we’ll assume she’s from Wisconsin). Sunday, September 4, 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm – Pasture to Plate Cheese Making Tour

This in-depth look at Appleton Farms’ dairy operation will take you from the pastures to the cheese kitchen viewing area – and everywhere in between – to learn about how we make our delicious farm fresh cheese. Our cheesemaker will show the process in action and answer any questions you have. Finish up with a sampling of some of our products. The Sunday, September 4 program meets at our Dairy Store at 3:30 pm and there is no need to pre-register. Become a Trustees member at the farm and day of and come on the tour without charge! Saturday, August 27, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Mushroom Stalking

Mushrooms are a fascinating part of the diverse habitats found in Berkshire County. Come to Bartholomew’s Cobble in Sheffield, Massachusetts on Saturday, August 27 from 10 – 12 and learn about the different varieties of mushrooms in our community and how to identify them. Wednesday, August 17, 10:00 am – 11:00 am – The Art of Cut Flowers

Come to the cutting garden at Naumkeag in Stockbridge, Massachusetts on Wednesday, August 17 at 10 am to learn about the flowers growing in season, and how to cut, care for and grow them in your own garden. Participants will leave with their own flower bouquet. Led by Naumkeag horticulturist Eric Ruquist, the program, run by The Trustees, is $9 for TTR members, $15 for nonmembers. Thursday, August 4, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Garden Mixology

The Trustees of Reservations and the Sustainable Business Network of Massachusetts are excited to present a series of Garden Mixology Classes this summer. Attendees will learn how to craft 3 unique cocktails using local spirits while enjoying appetizers from local caterers and restaurants, all while in a unique urban garden setting.

Join them on Thursday, August 4 in Northampton Street Community Garden in the South End for the third class. Privateer is our featured rum distiller and delicious Filipino cuisine will be provided by Pamangan.

Thursday, July 28, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Seasonal Secrets in the Kitchen Garden

On Thursday, July 28 at 10 am, the Trustees of Reservations will sponsor a walk at the Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate in Canton, Massachusetts. Mrs. Bradley and her family were proud of their gardens and being able to serve food primarily grown or raised on their property. The kitchen garden is in the process of being restored to its prior glory — with peach, apple and quince trees, and a bounty of berries for jams and sauces. Near to the garden is the cool shade of the rhododendron walk — walk the trails and hear upcoming plans for these historic areas of the property. Free for TTOR members, $10 for nonmembers. Tuesday, July 19, 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm – Powisett Pesto

Pesto is traditional made with basil, pine nuts, olive oil, garlic, but on Tuesday, July 19, beginning at 6:30 pm at Powisset Farm in Dover, learn how versatile pesto can actually be and how many different versions you can make. We will be using veggies and herbs from the farm and participants will get to leave with their creations and new ideas. Please note that most classes include options for vegetarians and vegans.

Pickles are an easy and delicious way to preserve the flavors of summer. In this Trustees of Reservations event on Saturday, July 16, we’ll harvest veggies and herbs right from the Nightingale Community Garden, 512 Park Street in Dorchester, and make quick and easy pickles. Saturday, July 16, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Culturing Dairy

Learn how to make yogurt, butter, and kefir (also known as fermented milk) in your own home. On Saturday, July 16, from 10 – noon, the Trustees of Reservations will be using local milk from Powisset Farm, 31 Powisset Street in Dover, Massachusetts, to teach you the basics, and participants will get to taste and take home samples.

Thursday, July 14, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Ornamental Vines

Come to the Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate in Canton on Thursday, July 14 between 10 and noon to explore the ornamental characteristics of climbers like honeysuckle, wisteria, clematis, and other (unique!) lesser-known species. In the indoor hour long talk, you will learn how vines climb, the support structures needed for each type of vine, best planting practices and maintenance. Jen Kettel, horticulturist, arborist and teacher, formerly the Arnold Arboretum’s Horticulturist, will be our instructor for this exciting new program. We will take to the paths along the formal and kitchen gardens and find examples of what you might like to do at home.
