  • Saturday, April 9 – Sunday, April 10 – 28th Annual Cactus & Succulent Show

    The Connecticut Cactus and Succulent Society will hold its 28th  Annual Show and Sale on Saturday, April 9, from 10 – 5, and Sunday, April 10, from 10 – 4, at Naugatuck Valley Community College’s Art & Music Center Cafeteria, Fifth Floor, 750 Chase Parkway, Waterbury, Connecticut (Exit 18 off I-84).  Free admission.  This is a judged show, with an auction, refreshments, book sale, lectures and demonstrations. Many leading cactus and succulent vendors will be there.  Each day the first 50 families will receive a free plant.  Lectures will cover such topics as Raising Succulents from Seed, Yankee Ingenuity in Horticulture, Flower Show Growing and Preparation, Living Stones, Potting Mixes for Succulents, Hardy Cacti for the New England Garden, and Ariocarpus (pictured below, in an image from www.botanica.uk.net.)  Each lecture lasts approximately 20 minutes, and programs are subject to change.  For more information, log on to www.ctcactusclub.com, or call 860-489-8356.

  • Saturday, September 18, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm – Perennial and House Plant Sale

    This annual sale sponsored by the Somerville Garden Club is a must for gardeners hunting for locally grown plants. An interesting variety of perennials, houseplants, small shrubs and trees will be available, all at very reasonable prices. Horticultural information and a table for children make the day even more enjoyable. The event helps support Somerville’s non profit garden club’s many outreach, education and planting programs.The event takes place Saturday, September 18, from 9 – 1, rain or shine, at Statue Park in Davis Square, on the intersection of Holland St. and College Avenue, across from the Somerville Theatre in Somerville.  Free admission.   • Friday, September 24, 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm, and Saturday, September 25, 8:00 am – noon – MCD Fall Bulb and Perennial Sale

    Come to the 4H Fairgrounds, 51 South Chelmsford Road, Westford, September 24 and 25, for the Middlesex Conservation District Fall Bulb and Perennial Sale – tulips, daffodils, alliums (below), unusual bulbs, iris, perennials and garden supplies (compost bins, bulb fertilizer, kitchen scrap buckets, etc). All items may be ordered in advance through September 4 to ensure best selection.   • Saturday, August 7, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Massachusetts Marketplace Festival

    Join the Massachusetts Horticultural Society for the Annual Massachusetts Marketplace Festival on Saturday, August 7, from 10 to 4, at Elm Bank Horticulture Center.  The event will feature the finest products from the region’s fields, farms, gardens and kitchens, with over 60 vendors offering new and locally produced food products, crafts, garden ornaments and gifts.  There will also be a plant sale and garden tours.  Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for MassHort members, and $2 for children under 12.  Tickets are available on site the day of the event.  Massachusetts Marketplace Festival is produced by MassHort with in-kind support from the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources and the Massachusetts Specialty Food Association.  For more information, log on to www.masshort.org, or call  617-933-4981.

  • Saturday, June 26, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm – Santa’s Friends Have a Green Thumb Garden Tour

    On Saturday, June 26, from 9 – 5, the Sea Spray Garden Club will sponsor a tour of eleven gardens in Salisbury, Massachusetts, for the benefit of Santa’s Helpers and the Amesbury Holiday Program.  Both charities serves over 750 families last year.  One of the featured gardens appeared in the May 2009 issue of Better Homes and Gardens magazine.  At the conclusion of the self guided tour at 5 pm, there will be an art auction, also to benefit the two charities.  Admission is $25, there will be plants available for purchase, and for further information, contact Doug Morris at breadman25@verizon.net, or call 978-948-8181.  You can follow the Sea Spray Garden Club on Facebook, key word Sea Spray Garden Club.

  • Friday, June 11 – Sunday, June 27 – GardenFest

    The Florence Griswold Museum, 96 Lyme Street in Old Lyme, Connecticut, has planned an exciting series of special events to take place in and around its historic gardens.  All events are free with Museum admission, unless noted.

    June 11, noon:   Garden Luncheon
    Third annual garden luncheon featuring Pauline Lord of White Gate Farm. Lord speaks about the importance of eating locally grown food for both health reasons and to support local agriculture.  $100, reservations required.

    June 11 and 12, 9am-3pm:  Plant Sale
    The Museum’s volunteers, the Garden Gang, host a plant sale. The heirloom perennials and unusual annuals range from $5 to $50. Proceeds benefit the Museum’s garden projects.

    June 13, 1-5pm:  Make-A-Painting Sunday
    Visitors can pick up all the painting supplies necessary to make their own masterpieces in garden or down by the river. No experience necessary. In addition to the painting activity, visitors of all ages can enjoy garden-related fun. Today you can also make a painting using flowers, leaves, and twigs as brushes.

    June 15,  11am: Demonstration by the Garden Gang in the Landscape Center on
    The World of Composting.

    June 16, 11am- 3pm:  Guy Wolff Demonstration and Flower Pot Sale
    Meet the man Martha Stewart hails as the maker of her favorite flower pots. Guy Wolff, the master potter from Litchfield, known for creating functional art based on historic designs, demonstrates how he makes his hand-thrown pots. A selection of Guy Wolff Pottery will also be available to purchase.

    June 18 & 19, and June 25 & 26, 11am:  The Painted Garden, a Guided Tour in the Griswold House, and at 2pm, a walking tour of the gardens and grounds

    June 20, 1-5pm: Make-A-Painting Sunday.
    Visitors can pick up all the painting supplies necessary to make their own masterpieces in garden or down by the river. No experience necessary. In addition to the painting activity, visitors of all ages can enjoy garden-related fun. Today you can also make a T-Shirt for Father’s Day.

    June 22, 11am: Demonstration by the Garden Gang in the Landscape Center entitled Selecting and Caring for Roses.

    June 23, 11am:- Family Day Award-winning children’s author Page McBrier will read her book The Chicken and the Worm and teach kids how to make a worm farm for great garden composting.  Then, from 2pm – 4pm, kids learn to create a flower arrangement. Bring your own water-proof container.

  • Sunday, June 6, 2:00 pm – The Maine Work of Beatrix Farrand

    The Roosevelt-Vanderbilt National Historic Sites are pleased to announce the Fifth Annual Bellefield Design Lecture: The Maine Work of Beatrix Farrand by Patrick Chasse, a program of its park partner, The Beatrix Farrand Garden Association, on Sunday, June 6, beginning at 2 pm, at the Henry A. Wallace Visitor Center at the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt Historic Site and The FDR Presidential Library and Museum, 4079 Albany Post Road, Hyde Park, New York.  Patrick will discuss Farrand’s life and work in Maine from childhood through her retirement at Garland Farm, including a number of private commissions that are rarely ever seen by the public.
